I was driving around yesterday and suddenly a fine smoke starts coming from the interior vents with a burning rubber smell, i rolled down the window and within 30 seconds it stopped. It hasnt happened since but what could it be. I checked under the hood and nothing smelt like burning rubber and all my belts and hoses were fine.

Don't know about cars, but what you described would be the first sign of an electrical fire in an airplane.

not sure about Mazda's, but there's a rheostat that controlls fan speed. In my old Camry - They put the butt end of that in the actual duct to keep it cool (as its just a big resistor) When it popped, I had On and Off (no middles) and a very "electronics burning" smell came out of the vents, Very quickly, and dissipated quickly. Does your Fan speed selection knob work still?

This happened to me once also...I think it has something to do with my AC compressor, because when my AC was off, no smoke came out. But now the problem seems to have fixed itself.

No smoke from the vents for about 5-6 months now :)

i checked all the belts, and my fan speed dial still controls it properly. Nothing has happened since, hopefully its not something too major

have you had your car rust proofed recently?

could be something as silly as oil dripping on the valve cover or something
