View Full Version : Ebrake handle is down but does not disengage

So I noticed that my ebrake handle got really loose when i released my ebrake this morning. Afterwards I try to reverse but the car would not go so I would have pull it up hard and then release it a couple times to get it to work.

I took off the rear wheels and checked it and noticed that upon pulling the ebrake, this one part on the rear calipers would move forward as the ebrake handle tightens the rear brake pads. As I release the ebrake, a spring would pull the ebrake cable back into the disengaged position. This only happens on the right side but my left side seems to be seized. I put some WD40 to lube it hoping that it would work but no luck. I have to hammer or tap that piece to disengage the rear left brakes as i believe the spring has lost it's elasticity/strength or whatever the correct term is.

Now I was told that the only way to replace is that to complete replace the caliper assembly. Can anyone confirm that in order to replace the spring, I would need to change my whole caliper?

In addition, is this even the remedy to my problem?

Thanks in advance

Right but what seized on your car Phil? Because when I pull the ebrake, i see that the cable is moving forward but it just will not spring back.

How did you fix your problem?

my problem was one of the membranes to one of the calipers had gotten stuck and it wouldn't release...had to buy a new cable. If it is the calipers then that can be a pricey fix..

Exact same thing happened to me. I temporarily fixed it by loosening the cable a bit (from the ebrake handle adjustment), and breaking off all the cracked membrane, then slathering the sh*t out of it with grease. Already bought a new cable and will replace it in the spring time.

You did all you can really do without changing the whole cable

(maybe a different scenario) Mine froze a week or so ago.

Just repeatedly, pull the ebrake up (slightly) and push down hard to help break any ice or grime thats making it stick.

lol you were right. Thanks Joe lol. So I called Jimmy yesterday and he told me to pick up the cable from you right from the start. And Im like are you that confident? and he's like yes, i am SUPER CONFIDENT lol. But thanks for leaving the part at the reception. I ended up getting to MOT at like 6:10. Yonge has so much traffic from the 401

It is indeed your cable, a very well known problem until they changed the design later. Wrote to Mazda Canada about it...they said they would file my concerns, I think you know what that means.
