Erratic Engine Reving

Hey there,

I have a 2010 Mazda 3GS 6spd with about 37000km and every now and again the engine will free rev when I pull it out of gear. It wont rev past 3000-3500rpm but it wont stop until I press on the gas. I try to replicate it but it's next to impossible to get it to do, it just does it when it wants. Has anybody else had this issue?

does this happen only at start up - or just any random moment?

Typically once the car has warmed up.

mine does it once in a blue moon but it stops after a second or two. i think its just extra gas being burnt up.
