Hey guys, so every morning I've been getting this. Under the conditions that the brakes are wet and I'm reversing, thats the only time when this occurs. I did a quick search but didn't see anything on this. However I found this on youtube which is exactly what my car does (my car is actually an 08.5 hatch).

It's not a defect. Mine do the same thing when it's wet out.

got the same problems. Usually occur after I wash the car, high moisture, or recent rainfall/snow. I tend to park the car backward.

My mom's car does this as well.

It's normal, but annoying nonetheless.

EDIT - should mention she has an 07 GS. My dad and I both drive GT models of various years and neither of us experience this.

That is really loud... >_<

That would drive me insane if my car made train horn brake noises like that. LOL

Believe me, when I sometimes adjust the cars on my family's driveway...reverse off it with my mom's car after it rains makes me think I'm waking the whole neighbourhood up.

mazda has never really been able to fix this issue even after several changes to their brake pads... you can blame them for using ford parts and blame ford for using cheap/crappy parts/designs... the problem seems to get worse as the pads ages

probably the only possible fix is to try aftermarket pads

drive the car after you wash it and try to use the brake as much as you can, dont leave them wet...i used to work at a auto detailing place and we had to do that to every car just right after we washed them.

hahaha sorry dude i laughed hard watching that vid, anyways, check that your calipers aren't sticking/binding sounds like your pads are screeching on the rotors a little too excessively. I've never had brakes squeal THAT bad, if there wet they might squeal for literally a second and hitting the brakes clears the crap on the pads/rotor and good to go.

Sometimes I just put on the parking brakes while reversing, problem solved :)

yeah.. i really hate this --

it was around 12:30 am the other night when I had to move the car from the street during some heavy snow..... really felt like i was going to wake everyone up.

sometimes the sound even comes when simply reversing and turning... but not as loud..

I think if your examine the pads, you'll find a slight lip from the pad wearing down.

If you also take a light sandpaper to the edge of the rotor and remove the rough rusty edge, it reduces the noise somewhat.

Seems to happen as others have said mostly in the wet and when cold. I don't get this in the summer.

Another thing to try is not applying the parking brake at night so the pads are not frozen/rusted on. I know not a good thing as you should always use your e-brake.

Won't help. I'm using Hawk HPS pads right now (Front and Back). I'm using DBA rotors in the front and Mazda5 OEM rotors in the back.

I noticed there is no noise from the front but its really loud in the back like the video.

Yup, its embarassing especially in a condo parking garage.

Sadly My car does this from the rear pads. Ever since I got ceramic pads in the rear, new rotors too - I think its because rust forms from moisture. Really cold days, I'm OK, but if it sits for more than 12 hours on a moist day, It happens in reverse. Its so bad that I back into my spot at night so I don't make the noise when I leave early in the mornings and wake up my neighbours...

Yeah exactly, I'm in the garage too. I'd probably be deaf if I parked outside :chuckle

I parked the way I normally do and I'll see if I can remember to take a quick recording of it tomorrow from the inside of the car. Fairly dry lately though so might get nothing for a change. Also want to record from outside too to see how loud it is from out there. Its pretty loud though, loud enough you can start to feel it in the steering wheel if I recall right. I've been reversing into the garage lately lol.

My car has no noise at all when reversing, I use to have this problem with OEM setup but now I have hps all around with dba 4000, no noise at all, no matter rain, over night, moisture, snow etc..

I imagine slotted or grooved rotors would assist in stopping this.

Mine do they exact same thing, but not that loud but still very annoying. Once I get to the end of my street it goes away.

God damn. This happens to me now. Every friggin morning.
If the car sits for more than an hour... it happens. I use my ebrake, it reduces it... but basically, I have to Pulse my e-brake. Full on or full off. Anything half applied, and they squeal like a train.

SO embarassing. How come my fiancee's Mazda5 doesn't do it!?! Bah. I guess its because its no longer garaged - But parked on my very steep driveway. I can't back into my driveway, because my nose scrapes too much heading out.

Don't worry it's a safety feature. It's similar to the beeping noise a large truck/van makes when it reverses, except in this case, our 3 is a train horn... LOL :chuckle

True ΔΔΔΔ
I got this since day 1 I bought the car and its on all Mazda cars not only 3, 6, 5, cx7, etc. I gave an explanation before on an older thread (2yrs ago)
1). Its because of the rust that accumulates on our rotors. + the fact that it only happens going backwards, because when going backwards your pads doesn't sit properly on the rotor (pad wear not aligned to rotor wear marks)
2). + most mazda rotors are bigger compared to other manufacturers resulting in louder sound because it resonate more.
3). + chamfering or lack of it. It helps to minimize the vibration to start in the first place, it has something to do with the approach angle of the pad material.
4). Try lube the slider pin it will help align the pads properly to the rotor.

Again I posted this on another post about 2 yrs ago when I change my rotors @ 68k km now I'm at 154k km and still OK the pads are still almost new,

And also the comment on eBay stuff....

Not because they are sold on eBay or kijiji they are no good. Do your research, look at the actual part look for the quality of the castings (vents surface). No matter how you look at it cast iron is cast iron they will still rust no matter what. It is the quality of the workmanship (casting) that matters and you can see that by looking at the parts. I have had the kijiji cross drilled rotors on my car far longer than the ``ORIGINAL`` that is installed from the factory.

Hope this helps

Should I be concerned about this when buying a 2013 Mazda 3 GS-SKY? Not that I particularly care about the sound, but more of curiosity thing.

Next time you replace your disk pads make sure you have the chamfer and lube the pins. Also I forgot to mention, make sure the new / replacement pads have the the anti vibration shims at the back.
