Just want to get your opinion of the good and the bad on this issue.
I've been changing my own oil on my 2010 Mazda 3 GS since new. I use Fram filters. The required Fram number for my car is 3614. It's a fairly small filter about 3" long (same size as the origional Mazda filter). I used to own a Mazda B-3000 Pickup. The Fram filter number for the truck was 3600. This filter is a little bit longer, about 5". I noticed that other than the length, both filters are identical. Last oil change I installed the longer Fram 3600 filter on my car. Fits perfectly.
I'm assuming that due to it's larger filter area, the 3600 will do a better job than the stock 3614. I figure the more paper, the better filtering and less back pressure.
What is your opinion on this. Is it a good idea to use the larger filter or should I switch back to the stock size. Thanks for your opinions.

You might want to check your oil level? If you put a bigger oil filter then your pronbaly a little low on oil.

May i ask why you indtalled that filter and not the proper one?

I always check the oil level by dipstick after oil change and running the engine for a few minutes. I gave the bigger filter a try cause I had one left over from my truck, and like I said, I think a bigger filter will do a better job. I welcome all opinions.

You do realize if something were to happen to your motor that it will NOT be covered cause you put a different oil filter in

You're right aris, warantee would be a problem. Guess they would also complain that I had a Fram filter installed instead of a Mazda filter. The dealer would still have to prove that the issue was filter related, ie: if a oxygen sensor went, it has nothing to do with the filter. But your point is well taken, dealer service and parts will prevent warantee problems down the road.

i'm not talking oxyegn sensors...if your motor was to blow and you try to get it fixed under warranty they will not cover it cause your using a oil filter from a different car/truck period!

I have the 2.0L also and i do my own oil change...i use the OEM filters...I buy 6 at a time from MOT and their the same price as fram filters if not cheaper. At 80,000km i extended my oil changes tio 12,000 km (synthetic oil) i got 140,000km on mine now.

JUst buy the OEM filters from the dealer...it's not expensive

Ok aris, I'll note your opinion for using the stock filter size. (this it my first post replying with a quote, please don't blame me if it doesn,t turn out right)

Any one out there know who makes the filters for Mazda. It must be a company like Fram or something , cause I'm sure Mazda doesn't have it's own filter plant.
