View Full Version : Stock fog connections on my 2012 sky

So I'm got all my hardware for my hid fogs. But I have a few questions;
1. What is the stock connection for the stock fogs?
Haven't gotten under the car yet, plus the access port under the car is prolly pretty small. Is it allso and H11? I know that one side you connect direct to the bulb, but with the relay harness, one connection goes direct to the bulb, and the other goes to the "signal" (ie the stock connection). That's the one I need to know. I want to make it a plug n play in case I ever wanna go back to halogens
2. If the stock connection is Mazda 3 specific, would anyone have an extra one I could get my hands on?
Plan would be to use that to solder onto the relay harness end to make it plug n play.
Thanks guys ;)

The fogs are h11 for my 2006 and my 2012, yours should be the same.

Indeed they are H11 for the 2012s, but the 2010-2011 cars were 9006 so things don't always stay the same.
We also have a sticky (in this forum!) that is updated with this info. Link (http://www.torontomazda3.ca/forum/showthread.php?8408-Exterior-Bulb-s)

I hate when they do that lol

I don't think you understood what I mean.....I know my car takes the H11 bulbs...ie on my mz3 07, if one had OEM fogs, there is a cable that has 2 DIFFERENT connections. One that plugs into the bulb, and the other plugs into the wire harness that is pre-wired from the factory. So my question is this;
Is there a similar setup on the 2012 mz3's? I know what your thinking..."why the heck doesn't that lazy dude just go look for himself"....answer; Because I don't have a garage, and since it's colder than a lawyers heart out there right now, (sorry if I offended), I don't have any place I can do this. Hence why I'm asking to see if anyone has done any hid upgrades to their 11 or 12's and could shed some light on this.
Thanx in advance guys ;)

Sorry... to add further to my last post; ref to the cable connecting the bulb to the factory pre-wire on my previous mz3 2007;
- 1 end is the H11 or 9006 plug, and other is a 2 prong plug with a square-like fitment....so I'm wondering if there is a similar setup with the 12's. When I'm ready to do the install, I just want to be prepared so I don't have to run back out to a junk yard or the stealer . . ahem cough..the DEALER to buy these said cables

go to the dealer and buy the oem fog retro kit. it will have the harness, switch and fogs with brackets that you are looking for
the connections you are looking for are on the pasenger side and the relay gets tucked away behind the washer jug which will be part of the harness in the kit
thanks

Hey Dan,
I already have the fogs, so I don't need the retro kit.
Here's the thing. I plan to put in a set of hid 35w 3k's. The battery relay harnesses that are being made now (like the one I have), are wired as such (I know YOU know this, but this is more for my understanding) ;)
1. positive cable red (with inline 30 amp fuse), to battery +
2. negative cable black, to battery -
3. male connection (longer wire with cable sleeve, 2 wires, 1 red 1 black) for passenger side ballast, and the ballast's red and black female plugs go DIRECT to hid bulb (So once this connection is made, the stock connection is not required on that side) CORRECT? to which I will seal it up and protect it from moisture.
4. male connection (short wire with cable sleeve, 2 wires, 1 red 1 black) for driver side ballast, and the ballast's red and black female plugs go DIRECT to hid bulb (HOWEVER the stock connector plug on this side (drivers side) IS NEEDED for the next connector..# 5.
5. This last wire is the "signal wire" (the wire that receives the signal coming from THE STOCK WIRING when the fogs are turned on, which in turn tells the relay to send power from the battery to spark up the bulbs.
It is THIS end of the wire that I need to know what type of connection to put on there....am I right to assume that this signal wire plugs into the connection at the top of this photo? In my case an H11...if that's a yes, then I've solved my mystery :D

Ok I understand your explanation. Took me a few reads to understand though lol. But thats not an issue.
Now do you have an oem switch already or do you have no switch at all at the moment? At this point I would suggest that you hook it up the way of an indy fog mod as you are well on your way to it.
One thing I am unsure of though is were do the grounds come from for the ballasts? Are they tied in to the battery ground cable? or do they have a seperate ground loop? If they are tied in to the battery ground you will have to seperate the ground cables to make them function properly
If you have an oem switch that relay must be hooked up as follows
30- power all the time
87- wire to the fog light ballast + side
86- power when key on from OEM harness (green wire) There may be more then 1 green wire on the passenger side so let me check that out which one it is.
85- ground from oem switch from OEM harness (orange wire)
If you want to go indy mod then hook up 86 to switched power inside the cabin from the cigarette lighter. Hook up 85 to the headlight switch wire orange inside the cabin as well

Hey Dan,
in answer to your ?"s.....
"Now do you have an oem switch already or do you have no switch at all at the moment"? YES
"At this point I would suggest that you hook it up the way of an indy fog mod as you are well on your way to it." ONLY problem I have with that is there are no instructions for that "HOW-TO" for the 2012's....ie wiring, color of...etc will most likely be different.
"One thing I am unsure of though is where do the grounds come from for the ballasts?" 2 connections (the standard 1 blue 1 black) for bulb to ballast...relay harness has a + and - wire coming from relay that plugs into ballast
"Are they tied in to the battery ground cable"? YES
"or do they have a seperate ground loop"? NO they do NOT"
"If they are tied in to the battery ground you will have to seperate the ground cables to make them function properly" ..... When you say this...what EXACTLY do you mean to function properly. I thought that's what the relay is upposed to do....plug n play?
I'll stop here, go and check the way my relay harness is set up and get back to you. In the meantime r u gonna check out what you mentioned in your post re;
"86- power when key on from OEM harness (green wire) There may be more then 1 green wire on the passenger side so let me check that out which one it is."
lemme know what you find out..and thanx Dan, appreciate the advice :)
