View Full Version : Increased road noise after hitting a curb

I let my girlfriend drive my mz3 during a snowstorm last week and she ended up sliding into a curb at 30-40 km/h (so she says at least).

So this happened to my passenger side wheel

And after that going >50km/h caused some pretty bad steering wheel vibration. Well with that rim now busted, I put the spare tire on the passenger side rear wheel and moved forward the undamaged rear wheel.

Now the vibration went away, but there was increased road noise. Sounded like I was driving on concrete pretty much. I figured that would go away once I get a replacement for the spare.

This weekend that just passed I bought 4 rims + tires from redxdragon (thank you again!) since I prefer the 5-spoke look, then went off to Prima Mazda to have them installed balanced and aligned. After that's all done I hop back in the car and drive spiritedly for a bit only to find that the increased road noise is still present.

What could cause this? Damaged wheel bearing? Damaged ball joint? I tried gently turning from left to right on an open road @ 70-80km/h to see if the noise would go away with the shifting weight and I couldn't tell much of a difference. Any help or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

...as an aside this car seems to be bad luck for me (2nd bad thing that's happened to this car when I'm not behind the wheel).

She hit a curb hard enough to break a wheel. Alarm bells should be going off in your head at this point.

Something else likely broke/was damaged (tie rods, bearing, etc) from the force of the impact. Get it checked out ASAP.

one of my co-worked tried to do a handbrake turn in the snow and slapped the back left side of his lancer into a curb. He wasn't going fast at the time, and had to replace his wheel bearing.

he said his car sounded like sitting next to the propellor on Porter.

I assume you have something similar, but likely worse...

Sorry to hear about that but you need to get the car looked at asap. Also dont let your gf drive your car again.

Thing is, I brought it to prima and asked them to check... On the invoice it said steering components checked when they did the alignment of the new tires...

Got any recommendations for a good place I can take my car to? Don't really want to go to those guys again...

I had a similar sound and it ended up being a wheel bearing and a stabilizer link.
I know Street Performance is a bit of a drive for you, but its definitely worth it to have Jimmy take a look at your car.
And it will be a heck of a lot cheaper than going back to the dealership.

Just jack the front end up and spin the wheel you should hear it right away if it's making noise, move it in/out to check for wheel play as well. I would bet on a ****ed up wheel bearing.

Andre,

Take it to Jimmy at StreetPerformance. Its worth the drive and he won't charge you an arm and a leg.

What kind of "road noise" are you referring to? You just put different rims and tires on. the new tires you put on they could be causing the noise.

It's a damaged bearing. Thanks for the help guys, getting this taken care of on the weekend.

Just take in to account that the tires could be louder as well. Like Vinnirap posted. My summers are quieter then my winters. But you also need to factor in tire wear which will not be an issue in your case now.
