I parked my car today. I took the key out of the ignition and stopped to check messages on my phone. I pull the door open and the alarm goes off! Is this normal? I was checking my phone for maybe 5 minutes. Does the system arm that fast? I would think the system wouldn't arm until you locked the doors.

It isn't a passive alarm. You must have pressed lock on the remote at least once.

I know when you put the car in Park, the doors unlock. I haven't sat in there long enough to test this, but do the doors re-lock after 30s (or more) like they do when you unlock with the key fob but don't immediately open a door manually?

Really? My 05 has a passive alarm and it's ****ing annoying.

I know it could be handy for some people in certain situations. But it just makes me paro that the doors would look itself with keys inside (dropped out of pocket or something)

But surprised my 05 has it and the new '12's dont

For it to lock itself, it first has to be locked and then unlocked.

1 - lock doors
2 - unlock door(s)
3 - wait.
4 - if no entry point is opened the doors will go back to lock on their own

Even the Protégés had this feature.

^^ That's what I'm wondering. After parking, the doors unlock. Does that put the car into step 2 of that cycle?

I don't think I hit the lock button since I just pulled the door to open and then the alarm went off. I turned off the ignition and dropped the keys in my lap
and checked my email on my phone. This took at most 5 minutes. I don't recall the doors relocking themselves. I'm going to try and repeat this experiment.
