View Full Version : 225/45/18 or 225/40/18 on stock suspension -- opinions plz
I recently purchased some RX8 wheels mounted on 225/45/18 tires for my mz3 and am currently deciding whether to sell them off to purchase 225/40/18's or not. There are a few things that I'm concerned about and would like some feedback from some members who have experience with these tire sizes on the 3.
I'm riding on stock suspension and do not plan on lowering so I'm concerned about how much higher the car will look at stock height with 45's. They are 1" taller than the 40's so I will be sitting around 1/2" higher off the ground. I've looked around and found a few pictures of rides at stock height with these tires and while some look fine, others look like the wheels are too big for the car. So, for anyone that has seen 45's on stock suspension in person, is the height difference that noticeable compared to 40's??
This is the look I'm trying to avoid. It wouldn't be as bad as this but you get the idea.

My car before it was lowered on 225/40/18. Easiest solution is to just lower :P
You should put 225/40/18 (tel:225/40/18) to keep it stock height...
Also you would have to put 26" rims and a lift achieve that look in the picture.
Lol I know that's just an example of what I mean by the tires looking to big for he car. I'm really trying to keep that oem look but with a bit of an upgrade on the wheels. But I don't want them to look awkward or out of place.
How would the ride be with the lower profile tires? I'm kinda worried about toronto driving especially with the roads as bad as they are in the city.
See that looks fine because it's similar to the stock 17's tire size. I'm just worried about 45's lifting the car noticeably

225/40/18 is recommended. Yes you can run 225/45/18 on stock suspension with slight rubbing at full steering lock or with a loaded car. Your speedo will be off as well.
Up to you.
I would sell off the 225/45/18 and buy 225/40/18 if you plan to keep the wheels.

running 225/40/18 with stock suspension with no rubbing issues. No rubbing also, when I did a camping trip with 4 people and 250 lbs plus of equipment and stuff.
Ride comfort is okay at time and doesn't bother me a lot.
Here is my current height.

sell the 45s for some like new used 40s. overall cost difference in changeover shouldn't be too much.
would 40's be fine for city driving? Im kind of worried knowing how bad the roads are here

will be slightly rough a bit but shouldn't be too bad. I do mostly highway driving and so so city driving.
45 vs 40. There should not be a huge different between them.

Go drive on front street between Jarvis and cherry street
My car got lost in a hole there once. Good thing I was sitting in the car at the time if not I wouldn't have been able to find it...
