Anyone know how to remove the grill covering the speakers? Is it as easy as simply prying them off with a screwdriver?

Speaker grills are moulded into the interior trim panel. You need to remove the entire panel.

Not sure why you would want to remove em... Well... I thInk it's because you want to put the aftermarket ones on instead?
Consider this before you do;
Thief walks up to your car, looks into window and says to his cronie "damn man cmere n take a look at this!!! Dudes got a set of high end alpines that I have GOT TO HAVE".... And I'll leave the rest up to your imagination....
OR it could go something like this;
Thief walks up to your car, looks in window, sees stock deck n stock speaker grill covers (never mind the fact you just installed a $200 set of ear candy in the doors JUST yesterday) ;) .... And says to his cronie "not even gonna waste our time on this man f*#k this.... And moves on.... And this is what you do :D
Nuff said ;)

I'm also pretty sure that they aren't detachable. They are permanently attached to the door panel, so if you decide to break the clips holding them on, you may not be able to reattach it at a later date.

I'm pretty sure he only plans on removing them to install speakers - in which case he will (as mentioned) have to remove the entire door panel.

The speaker grills have about 7 point in which mazda melted to hold securely in place. you can die grind them off but then require silicone to put them back on.
If you are planning on what i did which is use the grill that comes with the speaker, it is best to dremel out the honey comb leaving the silver trim and then sand it down until the aftermarket grill fits nice and snug. then just epoxy it into place and tada.

yes im installing after market speakers but i want to remove the cover because my install guy insists that my car fits 6.5" even though i researched and know that it fits 5x7/6x8. Just want to remove them and take a look for myself, because the grill itself does look like 6.5"..

6x8 should fit seeing as the car is equipped with a 5x7, they are pretty much the same, the grill is just for looks

Your installer is saying that "Yes you can use 6.5" speakers in our cars", however he neglected that you need to use a simple adapter to do so. You are correct in saying that our cars are 5x7/6x8.

I will be running 6.5 up front and 5x7/6x8 in the rear.

Why would you go to the bother of installing the grills from aftermarket speakers. Seems like a lot of work with no return.

The grills on the mazda 3 doors are completed open. the small holes are formed in the shape of the 5x7 speakers so if you want a full range of sound coming out of your doors with nothing in the way to block the sound you put the 6.5 aftermarket grill. and it also looks a lot better aftermarket than the one on the door
