Hey guys,
Im planning on buying some tires that are 225/45/17.
I dont know much about what the numbers mean in tire sizing, except for the last number lol.
What would be the best rim size for it these set of tires. Obviously i know 17", but is there a particular offset or something that go with these tires?

Thanks

If your planning on getting that kind of tire size. the width of the rim should be around 7.5-8. you could always go wider and get a stretched look.

The 225 means it is 225 mm wide.
The 45 means that the sidewall height is 45% of 225.

17x7.5 would be my preferred choice, but I would also consider 17x7 or 17x8. Those are the only 3 sizes of rim that I would look at.

Make sure you get rims with a sane offset, this is VERY important, not only the rim diameter and width.

Thanks for the info guys,
Im also planning on lowering my vehicle. I bought Sportlines. Would this effect anything by adding this tire size to it?

Confusing question you have there.
Lowering won't effect the tire size directly, but it may effect the size of the tire that you can use.
If you go too low you might need to stretch a thinner tire so that the sidewall is not as tall.

Sorry for the confusion.
What i meant was, by lowering my car on sportilines, and by having a wider tire then stock ones, will i rub on anything.

225 is the width of the tire

45 is the size of the tire profile

17 is obviously the size of the rim.

Considering stock 17x6.5 (or 7) rims ride on a 205/50/17 tire, I'd suggest getting something wide (17x8.5/9) to go along with your tires.

My personal vote goes for 17x9 rims to go with your 225/45/17 tires. As for offsets...well, you'll have to wait until someone with more knowledge of rims can chime in as I really couldn't tell you anything that you couldn't google up in 5 seconds :chuckle

PS - get ready to roll your fenders on sportlines.

9 is too wide to use 225, it is not recommended by almost all tire manufacturers. 8.5 is widest recommended rim width.

Fair enough. Shows how little I know about rims :chuckle

Thanks guys, i was really worried about rubbing and possibly having to roll my fenders.
Schmatt66, would you recommend a 5mm spacer? Not exactly sure what that is lol

also if you are on sport-lines, it will accelerate wear and tear on your stock shocks/struts vs. pro-kits. it would be a good idea to replace them at the same time with the springs since its the same labour cost (jimmy charges $120 or something regardless if you do springs/dampers or springs alone). and depending on the age of the car it might be time to replace them anyways (save yourself the headache and additional labour costs of doing it down the road).

koni yellows would be something to look into...

i'm running 9.5 with 225 tires, and my stretch is pretty safe compared to what a lot of people run. It's just a matter of preference, if you want to go a little past manufacturer spec, you should still be ok

Hey guys, with this size of tire, going from stock 205/50/17 to 225/45/17, will this cause problems with the speedomoter? Is the tire rotation that far different where the posted speed on my speedomoter is not actual speed im going. Not sure what the exact term for this is, but someone told me to check on that before i buy these tires.

17x8 would probably be the most ideal choice for the tires you have right now

you will be .4% off which shouldn't be a problem at all. and you will definitely need 17x8 rim for a nice square look; smaller width like 7 or possibly 7.5 will result in the dreaded 'bulge'.

17x8 is your safest bet if you're going to be getting sportlines....once the springs settle you'll probably realize that getting any wider of a wheel would push you into a fender. Also be aware of the offset of the wheel you're getting!!
