View Full Version : CEL P2187 ---> Could this be the culprit?

Hey guys, I threw a CEL last week and stopped by Jimmy's to get it scanned. Turns out that it's "system too lean on idle" P2187. Jimmy cleared the code and told me to clean out my maf and throttle body.

Ok, so I headed to CT and picked up some throttle body cleaner and maf cleaner..
I disconnected the battery and proceeded to take out the o-ring very gently and a piece of plastic off the lip comes off leading me to think that it was already cracked causing the CEL.

I finished all the cleaning and as I put the maf back into my intake, the o-ring still seems to make an airtight seal. I hook everything back up, reconnect the battery and fire up the engine. No CEL... Took it for a drive.. No CEL....... Until yesterday I was driving and up pops the CEL again.

So my question is, do you think that's the main culprit as to why the engine light came back?
Are there ways I can check the valve solenoid or pcv valve for visual signs myself or do these need to be checked by a mechanic...

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.. Plus i'll most likely be bringing my car for Jimmy to check out.
I inspected the hoses and my intake tubing for leaks and loose connections and couldn't find any

well it chipped off... so it could be the problem
now, you should also check and make sure the wires are in the connector good because it's a common problem for them to fall out

Thanks for the quick reply. MAF wires are good. None are pulled or stripped. I even have the whole bundle detached from the battery box to make sure they wouldn't be tugged on from working on the wires.

My main fear is getting stuff replaced and having the problem come back. I read the other thread where somebody had his purge valve replaced and i guess that wasn't the prob because his CEL came back on.

Would a chip that small cause this prob.. When I was fitting it back on, the o ring and maf still seems to seat properly and covers any gap.

I was just at Jimmys getting work done the other day too.. but no CEL at that time.. :(

Had the same issue,
I would also always stall out on fill ups as well.
Went to the junk yard, got a Purge Solenoid Valve from an 06, took 10 minutes to install. Code never came back.

Yup. If it's not the MAF it's most likely the Purge Valve Solenoid sticking. I just replaced mine a little while ago when I was getting a similar CEL and starting issues after filling up with gas.

I wouldn't suggest buying one from the junkyard as it could be faulty, unless you can get it for like $20. They are rather expensive through a dealer though.

Make sure you clean the MAF and TB also. Your MAF could be the culprit though so I would start looking at that first.

Installed a new MAF sensor and reset the ECU so hopefully that darn CEL doesn't come back.
But if it does, I'll take it to Jimmy to determine if it's the solenoid sticking or if it's an o2 sensor..

He will probably tell you it's the PVS.
