Hey all,

Had an interesting experience today at Motion Mazda. So my bro-in-law is looking into getting a used MX-5, just something to toy around with during the summer. He found one at Motion mazda in Orangeville that seemed pretty interesting, 2006 MX-5 GT. We decided that we would head up and take it for a spin and see whats what. This morning my brother in law called the dealership, spoke to the salesguy and let him know that we were driving from Pickering to take it for a drive.

This is the stupid part. When we got the the dealership, we checked out the car, it looked good, salesguy asks if we want to drive it, of course we do. He goes and gets the plate and when he gets back he tells us that he has to go with, now with it being a 2 seater that means I can't go with. The problem is, the reason that i went is that my bro-in-law does not drive stick well, he can get by, but it's hard to tell if there are problems with the car, or if it's his crappy driving. I was supposed to drive it to make sure everything was kosher. Obviously the salesguy said that I could drive it with him as well, this was stupid as we needed to check it out together.

Have any of you come across this before, my big issue is that it is only a 15 000 car, I mean my last car I bought was almost triple that, and my bro-in-law has had a multitude of cars ranging from a bmw 5 series to a hyundai azera. We are not new to test driving, and do not look like young punks looking for a joy ride. The thing that ticked me off the most is that when my bro-in-law called this morning to let them know we were coming up, they never bothered to tell us then. I mean I can understand on a 70 000 car, but really? on a $15 000 used miata.

END RANT!

To be fair, the dealership has their rules and policies and maybe they'll get in trouble if he lets you go out alone. It really doesn't matter what the price of the car is since a car is a car and if its stolen then its $15000 that they lose. You mentioned about telling them you're going together to see the car but its kind of your responsibility to ask them as well. They can't assume that both of you will be in the car.

Just what i think after working in the dealership for a few years.

when I was 17 and the mazda3s were starting to come out, i went to a dealership and my best friend and i got to drive a tiptronic (this was before i learned stick) mazda3 by ourselves. The dealer said he didnt want to come with us because it would "spoil the fun"

Years later when it came to buying a mazda3 i had many different experiences with dealers. Some dealerships allowed me to go alone, some wanted to accompany myself with me. It boils down to what they think about the worth of the car; their insurance; and if they're bored that day; and what they think of you at first impression

If by that you mean under 25 years of age they must be accompanied - I was 17 when I first drove a Mazda3 with my best friend at the dealership and 2 by myself recently when actually going to buy one - and I'm under 25 lol

working at lexus we always had to go on the test drive because stats show that when the sales person goes for the drive your closing ratio is higher... this will stop stupid shit from happening like you not knowing where something is or having something not working that might put a bad taste in your mouth. although if people are dead set on just going alone i would not join. but that being said most of the time i would jump in go up the street and back let you get a feel for the car then drop me off at the dealer and let you have at it.

truth be told some times they want you to go simply to make sure their product is not damaged...

Each dealership has its on policy. Some will go some wont. I think the biggest factor is the salesman.

+1

and the policy is dictated by the insurance they have.. some companies will not cover the car if a salesguy is not with them.

The last time I went car shopping I test drove cars from Honda, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Ford, Nissan, Hyundai and GM. The only one that let me go without a salesperson was the GM (Pontiac Vibe), and since the car had remote disable and lojack installed (They call it "Onstar") I can see why they wouldn't have been too worried about it. I was 26 at the time. It's pretty common for them to want to tag along, insurance reasons is plausible. I can see how that would be annoying in a two seater though.

When I test drove the 3 at Sundance. One of sale guy told me an old story of an old man and a younger (maybe the son) wanted to test drive a MX5. Sale person at the time agree to let them drive but did not get a copy of the licence. The mx5 was taken for a spins and was found 400 km west of Edmonton. After that, they changed the rule.
