View Full Version : WHATS A DECENT/CHEAP TIRE? 225 40 18

Found a set of 18x8" rims I want to get for my new summer setup so just need to pick out a set of tires for them now. My total budget is around $1200 for the rims and tires, and the rims will be about $700 of that budget. So that leaves me with roughly $500 for a set of decent 225 40 18's. The shop (which is in London, where I am, otherwise I would have just gone with one of the sponsors on here) can pretty much order in whatever. Trying to stay away from the chinese knockoffs if possible.
Thanks guys

in that price range, maybe try looking for a used set. I got my 18" Kumho Ecsta SPTs with about 90% tread left for $350 delivered to my work (the guy was local). Of course deals like that dont come up all too often, but if you're not in a crazy rush or dead set on getting something brand new, used might be the way to go.

They seem to be able to order in anything so figured I get a couple opinions on here with help in choosing. Noticed the Falken 912's seem pretty good, and 1010tires has them for $130 a piece.

Any other popular alternatives around that price?

The 912's are decent..as long as it does not rain, and you only want them for ~2 seasons.

the Nankang NS2's are decent, and they are within your budget i believe, used them for a couple summers

Sumo Akina or Nankang NS2 should be about 500.

2 years ago I bought a set of BFGoodrich super sport av/s tires for $600... That included tax, shipping, duty, brokerage fees and shipping. Locally everyone wanted $850 + tax

if you live in london, why not make the drive to detroit and pick up some tires from discount tire? for $500 you could get some nice tires that would cost well over $700 here from the sponsors. make a day or two out of it (shopping etc).

Nankang and Akina are both Chinese tires.
The Falken ZE912 is solid. A GREAT budget tire is the Barum Bravuris. Its European made and from Continental. :)

Thanks for the input guys. I have a friend of a family that lives near Port Huron that I may be able to work something out with. Tirerack has a good deal right on now Goodyear Eagle GT's for $111/each after rebate, any good?
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Goodyear&tireModel=Eagle+GT+(W)&partnum=24WR8GTXL&vehicleSearch=false&fromCompare1=yes
I'll look into maybe even having a set online shipped to the guys place, then just drive down to get them.

I'm in the same boat, but different specs 215/45/17.
Anyways, I'm looking at:
Sumitomo HTR Z II
BARUM BRAVURIS 2
Falken ZE912
You can get the Barum Bravuris 2 from GTA Tire & Auto Centre for $126.44 in your size.

bit of advice:
1) forgo the $40 savings and get the general tire g-max which is the same price. it has a higher tread wear rating and should last you longer than the good years, not to mention that it is well reviewed.
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/TireSearchResults.jsp?filtering=true&width=225/&ratio=40&diameter=18
2) make sure to check out sears tire centre and discount tire. their prices, particularly discount tire which can price match tire rack, are better because there is no shipping charge.

I'm getting the sumitomo on thursday from allen. the majority of reviews are positive. Seems porche owners aren't happy with them, but if you have a $60,000 car, why the hell are they buying 500 dollar tires? Overall, mazda 3's seem to get good life out of them (about 40,000km) and initial noise and ride quality is great, although they have the tendancy to "flat spot" if you park them for a few days - 15km of driving and the flat spot is gone though.
Fingers crossed - I turned down the super sports for these, simply because they were rated quieter.
Edit: Oh, I ordered 205-50-17

40,000km ... I'd go through them in a year then heh ...

I'd go with the Falken ZE912's. Good tread pattern and fair tire in my opinion. The tire got some good ratings.
I have currently the bridgestone protenza RE 760, Initially I loved them, but about 10,000km in, I couldn't get them to stop shaking at highway speeds. 3 balances, an alignment, Nothing. Think I just got unlucky. They also got LOUD. Like... On older highways or the 407, I can't hear myself think, and I'm shouting to "talk" to my fiance. I'm hoping the sumi's are better.
40,000km is decent for a summer tire. They're soft, they wear fast. Paticularly if you're lowered and have camber.
I looked at my bridgestones, and I got them april 2010, and they're bald now, 2 Years @ 19,000km (ish) per summer season, and they're done, so hopefully the sumi's can last that long. For 500 dollar summer tires, I don't expect the world.

I've got the nangkang NS2's and I love them! They handle great in dry/wet conditions, tire wear is far better than expected and road noise is minimal. For the price they can't be beat!
When i was initially looking at buying tires, I talked to Allen at Simply Tire and he said these were a favorite for those on a budget.

Just noticed this deal on ebay through Discount tire direct's online store. They're offering free shipping to Canada (except for $160 import fees) on 4 tires and you also get a $100 pre-paid Visa card.
http://stores.ebay.ca/Discount-Tire-Direct/Tires-NEW-/_i.html?rt=nc&_nkw=225%2040%2018&_fsub=7361854&_sc=1&_sid=8052644&_sop=2&_trksid=p4634.c0.m14.l1513&_pgn=3
They have a few options: General GMax, Hankook Ventus v2 and v4, Goodyear Eagle GT and Falken 722 all for around $600 shipped (after counting in the Visa rebate)
Seems like a pretty good deal, just have to factor in whatever installation costs would be.
The deal is on till the 31st, wish I noticed it earlier, what you guys think?

Canadian Tire has the General GMAX on for $150 per tire installed + $35 M/C gift card. After paying installation here, the price will be about the same.

Since your in London, I would suggest Bailey's Tires in Buffalo. Totally worth the drive. Bought my Hankook Evo V12's when they came out. I was getting quotes of 900-1050 in the GTA. When the dollar was on par back then like it is now, i paid $550 with taxes, install and eco fee. Add about $30 for gad back and forth.

You might also want to consider http://www.discounttires.com (this site is DIFFERENT from discounttire.com, no "s" at the end of "tire"), they're having a sale right now. You can pick them up at the Detroit border.

I think the price of Hankook V12s went up this year. You could find them for ~500 all over the place last year, but they are all now closer to 700 this year.

Remember that, when buying tires on line - install and balance will still be another $80-100. (on-top of duties, shipping, etc)
it's sometimes cheaper just to go to our sponsors and ask them for a price match or close-to it

^^^^ YUP!
Plus depending on where you live. Saving $140 is great! However, if I need to spend $70 in gas, and 6-8 hours of my day or more, to save a total of $70, no thanks! :)

I guess I'm only thinking of myself since I live in Windsor hehehe ... I can buy the tires, ship them to the states, take my car over there and have it installed no tax.

Well seems every cross-boarder option will run me about $600+ install for a set of 4. Im leaning towards a set of the Barum Bravuris 2, with Simply Tire selling them for $520+tax. I waited to pull the trigger on the set of rims I had eyed up, the MSR 095. I like the spoke design and the black chrome finish is something different from the rest. Bodykit Warehouse in Brampton has them for $650 a set, and offer 10% off when you signup for their online newsletter. http://img267.imageshack.us/img267/8519/msr095blackpearl.jpg

600 / set tires
80 mount and balance
650 / set for rims
= roughly 1300?
I'm pretty damn sure you can get a rim and tire package deal (installed) at a local sponsor for less.
Save you the hassle of driving all over Ontario.

Discount tires deal expired ( :( ) and the highly recommended khumos are backordered everywhere.
I ordered 4 Falken 452s for about 600 shipped from tiretrends, they were by far the cheapest and are canadian. A local store that i did a sanity check with quoted me 250/tire and I asked if that included installation at least and they said "Yes, installation is included but there is a 35$ balancing fee per tire". WTF??? lol

Just an update on what I finally settled with. Ended up picking up a set of used Michelin Pilot Sport's off kijiji for $400, ordered a set of 18x8 Konig Illusions from Discount Tire Direct and had them shipped to my door for $750, then got everything installed for $70. Overall I'm pretty happy with my new setup, and still came in around my original $1200 budget. :)
