View Full Version : 2004 HATCH.... 10 inch or 12?

Just about to start shopping around for some audio :)
Had two twelves in my Grand Am which seemed to satisfy my ear. However, now I have a hatch and my baby is much smaller than my previous car and people have been warning me that two 12s will make her rattle. I know dynamat can fix that problem, however I dont want a crazy system anymore. Ground does not need to shatter when I roll up. Just want some bass to cruise to. Plus, I dont want to dynamat her. Also need some trunk space for large gym bag and school books and stuff, so the box cant be ridiculous.
Need an opinion on what would be sufficient power, with no rattle, with a relatively small box...
one ten?
two tens?
one twelve?
help please :)

I am running 1 10" and it is more than enough for a hatch. Have the setup for sale as well ;)

i had an alpine type s and type r, both 12" and matched with appropriate amps and they both rattle.
the only thing that rattles is the hatch spoiler really, as long as u dynamat that or don't have you one you won't experience much/if any rattle

I dont have a spoiler....
So no rattle? Will my cargo cover rattle? Is that what I would have to dynamat?

no my cargo cover doesn't rattle...basically when i blast it if i go outside and hold my spoiler...
there is absolutely no rattle. =)
it might just be because i don't hear it behind the bass but I think the spoiler is the real culprit behind the rattle

A sub will always cause "some" rattling unless you fix everything which is almost impossible. If your car didn't rattle before, it probably will once you get a sub lol.
I find that 10" subs are good for sound and space. If you need a little extra bass on the lower end I like a 12". I currently run a 12 and am happy with how it handles all of the types of music (rap, dance/electronic, metal, etc) I throw at it.

I've had 1 12, 2 10s and 2 12s now it all depends on your style ye bigger the sub the harder it his depends on the tune and depends on the box my twelves box was ported up rattled the ahit out of my cover but now it's not ported and hits harder

Okay cool, since I have no spoiler I dont anticipate bad rattle.
Im glad the cargo cover wont rattle either.
Im probably going to go with a 12 based on what you guys are saying, Better to have more than necessary than not enough I guess.
Plus a 12 might silence out the gunshots in Scarborough... LOL (just kidding) =)
Thanks for all your input!

the first thing I can think of is a Bazooka BassTube
its a compact design - so wont take too much room in the hatch
The new BT-series 10" bazookas are pre-amped for 250watts RMS
MSRP is just over $300 which isnt bad considering its an "all-in-one" package

Also depends on the enclosure you get, going sealed vs. ported.
If your looking at good bass for all kinds of music I would recommend 2 10"s that's what I run and I can still get a set of golf clubs in my trunk.
If not that setup get a good 12" it will give you good range across all different types of music.

This is a misconception. A properly 'matched' sub and amp with a properly matched box will never cause rattling....I can punch my system at full volume and not a single rattle, with no sound insulation either.
Distortion or bad harmonics are most probably the cause of the dreaded rattle....and maybe some loose body parts ;-)

1 type x 10inch woofer requires a box that is approx. 1.5cubicft, this is 20"widex14"highx18"deep, pretty much half your turnk right there. i have 2 10s in the trunk with optimal boxes and i just have enough room for a pack of 12pack coke deep.
Also you have to realize that once you sacrifice box size for more trunk space your subwoofer performance goes down because the box you have is not to spec
http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_27184_Alpine-SWR-T10.html
If you go with something like this you are getting a FANTASTIC subwoofer and a sealed box will only be 20"widex13"highx5"deep
http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_26279_Alpine-PDX-M6.html
pair it up with this amp and youll get some rattles alright
The ultimate question is how much do you have to spend because if you go low end in a small enclosure you might be disappointed

That depends on the subwoofer, but your right cost is the issue. My JL 10W6v2 only requires less then .7 cu ft. My ProWedge's outside dimensions are only 16x12x11" it'll fit right behind the 40 fold side of the rear seat, and very little footprint. Check my profile album out to see how small my sub box is.

Haha the TTC had a great position open at the Malvern Garage but I decided; between the stink of the recycle dump nextdoor and the constant worry of the car getting vandalized to decline the position.

Was watching "Street Customz" westcoast customs show and they modified Zack and Cody's rides with 3 8" bass tubes in a box... For the sound it was supposed to be louder than a 12".... unsure how legit it is, but with the right components anything is possible with bass tubes.

that's for a TypeX though.
Doubt she needs 1000watts
Generally speaking a 10 and 12" sealed enclosure only needs about 1 square foot

One ten. or a really powerful 8.
Anything else will likely rattle the shit out of your car. I had 2 10" kickers in my Jetta and they caused about every part in my car to come loose and all the brake lights in the back to occasionally get disconnected.
edit - not to mention that cover piece that goes over your trunk area in the hatchbacks would be going insane from all the bass :chuckle

Was that 3x8" subs in the tubes? then it's simple logic, 3x8" subs equals 24" pushing air. Thats twice the area pushing air then a single 12. So more sound level, simple.

Alright, fellow music lovers. I have just purchased a 12inch Rocker Fosgate sub "Punch Series"...
Took into consideration my love for bass, and the music I mostly listen to (hiphop, rap, as opposed to rock) as well as the small box it came with.
I am assuming the box is not sized right as it is substantially smaller than some of the other12inch sub boxes.
However, the box is still small enough to be easily moved, will allow space for my large gym bag and also looks pretty! (The silver cover matches the paint on my babygirl).
I know the box size may jeopardize the sub's overall performance but given that it is a 12inch and I drive a hatch, I can afford to lose some sub power.
Hoping to have it installed this week! Cant drive like this anymore... haha.
The tube seemed perfect (they even have one shaped like a NOS bottle!), But it was out of my budget (student)...
Thank you all for your input and help. Cross your fingers that she sounds amazing, cause if not.. I will be looking again LOL

Hey Marta, have you checked out the RF site? It's pretty awesome. You can check to see if your box is actually the right size or too small for the application of your woofer, if thats a concern ofcourse. Just go to rockfordfosgate.com>Support>Knowledge Base>WooferBoxAdvisor. You just punch in your woofer model and viola all info is there, box measurement Qt etc;. Plenty of helpful info on there for anyone interested in car audio too, I find it very helpful anyway.

Marta, did you get a Punch P1, P2 or P3?
I had 2 P1 10" subs for a bit and boy, if you like bass you're going to be really satisfied!
Marta
04-23-2012, 03:24 PM
It is a P2.
My very, very, very limited audio knowledge tells me that Rockford Fosgate is supposedly one of the best when it comes to subs.
Im glad to hear your P1s delivered...
Hope this P2 sounds great.

I will most definitly check out the specs when once I get a chance to measure the box. It is very small, of that I am sure. This is a fantastic tool though, thank you! (Car audio stuff goes waaaaaayyy over my head!).

IIRC, the P2s sounded a bit less "raw" than my P1s, however they hit better, deeper tones and frequencies so I'm sure you'll love it.
