Ok ... so it looks like I'll be getting new tires very shortly ... I've narrowed down my choices to the following:

Falken ZE-912 $435.00 US tax in and shipped
Hankook VENTUS V12 $384 US tax in and shipped
BARUM BRAVURIS 2 $465.56 CDN tax in

Key point to remember ... I do weekly driving between Richmond Hill and Windsor. Looking for a tire that has good performance and decent treadwear (i.e. I don't want to change tires every summer). Thanks. :)

The V12 is the cheapest? I'd go for that given the price, hands down.

Even in light of all the long distance driving?

+1 for v12.

Usually do highway driving and notice the tires are quiet and pretty good ride comfort. Traction on wet and dry are pretty good so far.
Did one day with heavy snow and had no problems (highly do not recommended to do this)

Got my V12s put on for about 2 weeks, they are highly recommended by many on the forums. I got no complaints about them so far.

I'm just concerned about wear if I'm driving weekly to and from Windsor. I can't afford to change tires yearly.

You'll have to pay duty and taxes at the border unless you are getting them installed in the US then

That's the plan :-)

if he is there for 24hrs yes (limit is $200), but usually they waive you through even if you declare it. if he is there for 48hrs, then no taxes as his limit is $800.

all he he has to do is pay duties (again, if they don't wave him through which is usually the case) if the item is not made in north america (and is not exempt under NAFTA).

Just remember ... if you get them installed in the US and the customs agent takes a good look at the tires and notices that they are brand new and you haven't declared them, you are subject to penalties on top of taxes and duty AND your name will be flagged for all future cross border visits and you are guaranteed an inspection every time. I had a friend who was driving and her passenger did not declare purchases and was caught. Now everytime she crossed the border, they pull her over and inspect her car.

Whenever I have been over for a daytrip and I declare my purchases unless it's under $100, I have been sent in to pay HST on the purchases EVERY time. If you declare it then they don't bother to collect duty but they will collect HST.

Also remember that the new limits don't kick in until June.

I'm a student in the US too, I cross over four times a week ... I'll have my car washed in Detroit too ... so everything will look clean and shiny ;-)

Border agents are trained to look at certain things including brand new tires with the nobbies and brand new tread on a tire. You are better off getting really dirty and driving through some mud than being clean and shiny. New tires are REALLY obvious.

Just run the tires at 35 psi or above. The side walls are soft as a pillow

If the CBSA officer asks you about your tires you tell him that you had them installed a few days ago because you didnt want to wear off your winter tires... I work for Corrections Canada and we deal with CBSA on a regular basis and I have never had issues with that kind thing... that said I do flash my badget and get away with a bit more... but still if the officer does that hes a fu**ing d!ck.

They are just doing their job, whether you are smuggling $400 of booze, cigarettes, clothes or tires, it is still not declaring what ytou purchased in the US. If you don't declare ... it's just the risk you take by doing so. You have to decide if its worth the risk.
