View Full Version : HID wiring issue

Okay so I have headlights with Angel Eyes & OEM HIDs, however, after Ridgeway Automotive wired up my Angel Eyes (they did a great job), I noticed that the HIDs in my headlights didn't turn on after about a week of having the AEs wired up. I took the car over to a local place here in hopes of them checking out my wiring to see if it was the wiring job that was screwed up or if I needed a new HID kit. When I got there, they took my car in and noticed immediately that they weren't turning on because of the wiring so I had them rewire my headlights for me. Here's where the issue starts...

I don't think buddy was actually listening to me when I was talking to him because I told him that Ridgeway had SPECIFICALLY wired my AEs through my ignition so that they would function as permanent DRLs, while my HIDs in the headlights and fogs would stay set to auto and be off with the relay harness by day and both functional by night fall. He instead wired up my AEs to my headlight switch (WTF?) so now I have to turn them on manually along with my headlights every time.

I made this video showing me playing with the lighting switch on my car demonstrating how faulty they are. The noises in the video are from me pulling and releasing the parking brake (which is also when my lights will flicker). Also, during the video there's a period where I have just my AEs on with my fogs, which means the HIDs themselves are failing, as I don't have an independent fog mod and shouldn't be capable of turning my fogs on without turning my headlights on as well.

I'm pretty sure he wired them up to the parking brake somehow but I'm still wondering as to why they won't function properly. The shop told me that I needed to get a capacitor to regulate the voltage for my HIDs however I am also fairly sure that the wiring they did is garbage. My passenger side foglight is also out at the moment so it driving at night with no headlights and one fog is pretty much out of the question (I live near the boonies = no street lights)

If anyone has any suggestions as to what may be causing my issues with the headlights I'd greatly appreciate if you could share them :)

Here's the video

P.S - Chris (RidgewayAutomotive), if you're reading this, please know I'll be coming back to see you guys soon to put an end to this nonsense.

Why didn't you initially just take it back to Ridgeway?

Who knows how they are wired up now. :(

The place is just up the street from me so really I only went there out of sheer convenience but the guy had HID kits and stuff for sale so I figured he knew what he was doing. I didn't want him to touch the AEs at all because Ridgeway did a great job with them all I really wanted was for him to properly rewire my HIDs and do his best to hide the excess wiring that made my engine bay look terrible before. If I was to open it up and take a picture now, you couldn't see any wiring evident for the Angel Eyes or the HIDs.

My guess is that he screwed up somewhere along the relay harness because my HIDs shouldn't come on at all regardless of what I do with my parking brake with my relay harness functioning effectively.

Yeah but why would you take it to someone else if the original installer wired it up a certain way. Not everyone is knowledgeable that way.

They should never come on if you have them turned off. If they are set to auto and it's dark enough then they would come on.

Just PM Mcguyver or Lockdown if you aren't taking it back to Ridgeway. No one is going to be able to diagnose your issues without seeing it and working with it. You may have really effed things up by going to that other place. :(

If you remember what your lighting system was like b4 the so called mess, when you release the parking brake, the headlights come on. So it sounds like he hooked up the HID's to the stock headlight wiring. You will have to install the caps to get rid of the flickering.

Are you sure you have OEM HIDs? I thought that wasn't availabe in 06s.

I'm pretty sure what's happening is you have aftermarket HIDs wired up, and nothing was done about the DRL. They are flickering when the headlights are in DRL mode and not getting full draw. You can either delete DRL on your lowbeams, or install a cap.

They aren't from my car originally but they are apparently factory HIDs which I believe because the ballasts are mounted properly under the headlight. I think he forgot about the relay harness & Chris (YOTR) is right.

Time to purchase some caps and get this fixed up :)
