View Full Version : Is buffing out a new car a good idea?

Just got my brand new 2012 Mazda3 in black mica and noticed that there are scratches in the clear coat all over the car. Most noticeably on the roof, pillars and side back panels. I went back to the dealership and the sales manager offered to have it buffed. I am going back in a few day to have it done but am having second thoughts. I do not fully understand what is done to buff a car but am concerned that a layer of the clear coat will be removed in order to smooth it out, which will compromise the long term durability of the paint job. The scratches aren't deep but definitely visible since the car is black. So there is no paint damage, it just doesn't look good cosmetically. The sale manager also said that a paint sealant will be applied. Does anyone have any thoughts on whether I should go ahead and get the car buffed or leave it as is?
It will be fine... Don't worry

You will likely trade swirls for buffer trails

I don't know why but that made me laugh but if you do it properly or hire someone to do it properly you will be fine.

The question is, do you trust the guy the dealer will use to do a good job? If it's a pro detailer, yes. If it's the guy that scratched the paint during delivery prep, no.

Good point. Ask about the "detailer" that's going to perform the job. Same one tell 'em no.

I would bet my left nut it wouldnt go well. Its just how most dealerahip detailing bays are run. Iys a syatemic problem, not necessarily the actual detailers fault. I have been behind the scenes, i have seen how a number of them are eun. Quantity over quality.
