If you pick up your axe and walk out after buying it, I hardly think the cashier is going to stop you and insist you wrap it up. An axe isn't a restricted weapon anyway, so there's no laws against walking around with one in your hand.

That being said, I think the most likely scenario here is that she's returning the axe. Turns out her boyfriend wasn't cheating on her after all.
