For a few different reasons, I've decided to sell the Mini. Threw it up on Kijiji after a dealer offered me more than I expected on trade-in.
I'm looking at the Hyundai Genesis Coupe. I'm undecided on whether or not to go for the 2.0T Premium 6-speed, or the 2.0T R-Spec. Keep in mind, for 2013 the Genesis Coupe got a new face, and the power on the turbo is bumped from 210 to 274hp.
Premium:
-Nav
-Heated leather
-Sunroof
-18" wheels
R-Spec
-Cloth seats
-Brembos
-LSD
-19" wheels
I realize no true "enthusiast" would sacrifice an LSD and Brembos for a sunroof and leather, and I also realize that leather/heated seats can be added after the fact, but I can't help but think that I've never had a car without a sunroof, and it's something I use all the time.
Also, price points on both models are within ~$150, when all is said and done.
I also looked at the:
-Subaru BRZ, but insurance is ridiculous (I'm 23)
-Scion FRS, but insurance, and I couldn't take myself seriously driving a Scion.
-MX5, but no back seats (nearly-useless back seats are still usable for short jaunts)
-370Z, too expensive
-Used G37S, too expensive / gas guzzler
-Used Boxster S, insurance too expensive

my buddy's mom has the brembo package. apparently it's 5k in parts for a brake job.
edit #2: $900 per rotor, front pads are $550 for the set... don't know about rears. That's for OEM though, obviously you can get cheaper aftermarket.

id say go with the rspec, my buddie has the first genesis with the brembo package and he loves the car, but went to drive an rpsec with the 274hp for fun and i watched him almost trade his in for one, and even his has some mods to it, but aparently it was a night and day difference :S

Re: the OP
I didn't think I could do without a sunroof, going from a 3GT to speed3.... but really, its something you can do without if the other perks of the car are worth it. For me, my first turbo was > than sunroof haha
Just use your windows.

I think it depends on what you want to do with the car. Semi-regular track use (more than 3 times a year), go with the R-spec and sacrifice the sunroof. Mostly cruising and back-road endeavours, go with the amenities since they are important to you and just upgrade the pads as needed.

Yes it is. Funny enough, looking at your avatar, I looked at S2000s too, but I can't do without a backseat. Even a useless back seat like the one in my Mini, a Genesis, or the other cars on my list is usable to toss someone back there occasionally. Man, that car is a hoot to drive though!

Hehe, well even the 2.0T Premium has 274hp. The only things the R-Spec has that the 2.0T Premium doesn't is LSD and Brembos. I'm not picky about Brembos; I do admit I'd like to have LSD though.

I would say if you are going to be drifting alot ;) then go for the r-spec, realistically on a car like this the brembos are not really a big deal other than being able to say you have brembos. Otherwise do the premium, leather and sunroof in a car like that are a must, and in my opinion the genesis coupe without the sunroof (yes I've driven both--almost bought one but hyundai tried to rip me off on my trade in) is very dark on the inside and just isn't as comfortable.
So in a nutshell
Tracking/drifting----R-spec
Daily driver---------Premium

Premium:
-Nav - maybe you can get put in the rspec
-Heated leather - nto really a deal breaker - maybe even have heaters installed in the cloth seats or ask if they can upgrade it to leather.
-Sunroof - big winner on this trim
-18" wheels
R-Spec
-Cloth seats - sport cloth i suppose?
-Brembos - look / function awesome but will cost a bit when it comes to brake replacements
-LSD - winner in this trim, hard to not have a car like this without lSD.
-19" wheels - they do look nicer then the 18s. and even nice then the 18s with brembos :P
also looks like in the "gt" you get what they call GT Calibrated Suspension and Strut Tower Bar (Front Suspension), hids. so i dunno to me id go with the gt or Rspec, leather is nice, and the sunroof is awesome, but for the sport cloth, brembos even with the brake replacement cost in mind, lsd and amazing looking wheels. i mean what could you possible what to do to upgrade the gt if ever, it comes fullly packed.

Good choice. Seriously it all comes down on what your willing to sacrifice and what you feel is more important. Its a shame that they don't have the GT model for 2013. It had the best of both worlds. All the performance goodies of the RSpec in addition to the creature comforts such as leather, sunroof and premium sound system.
They have improved the shifter of the 2013 model but I have just installed my TWM SS and upgraded the transmission fluid. Its incredibly smooth and precise. Add a $400 tune and the car changes drastically. PM me if you have any questions or want to go for a test drive.

A couple of people including my friend did a tune and ended up going back to stock after busting some internal components. Hopefully it doesn't happen to your gen.
To the OP though, the sunroof and other luxuries are nice to have, but personally I'd probably go for the R-spec. The LSD and Brembos are worth it! Navi system can be done aftermarket, my friend has installed a couple of them before amongst other things he can help you with if you get a gen!

I'd go for the R-Spec, but I don't really care much for leather seats on a sports car (summer time sticking?)...also I'd go with the V6 model myself if this was going to be my second car. Why? The performance possibilities when modding are way better, and since it's a second ride fuel economy doesn't really matter much.
270ish hp on the new turbo is impressive though, the V6 has 305 and if you're willing to drop cash on a turbo down the road apparently you can see over 400. My 2 cents and more.

For the 2012 model there was no R Spec model. There was the base, GT and premium models. RSpec was only sold in the US until this year.

There are a few different tunes available for the Genesis so I can't speak for all of them. However, I have several friends that are using my current tune for the last 2 years with zero issues. Is it perfect, nope, but then it also depends on the user. I have heard some people getting them tuned to run on 91 Octane then decide to downgrade the fuel a few months later to save some $$. Needless to say, the engine reacted accordingly. Also, some people on the Genesis boards have bought performance parts off ebay for a fraction of the regular price and had something implode.

I once did a quote on a Genesis 3.8 GT and found it was only 5 bucks a month more for insurance over my 2010 GX with full coverage. Not surprised to see the 2.0 is even less. Hyundais are super cheap on insurance.

Yup, my insurance went down $40 a month. When I had asked why it was cheaper, especially since I was going to what they considered a sports car, they mentioned all the additional safety features and low cost of ownership. Keep in mind I have my home insurance with them as well so I get a great discount plus add some winter tires for another 5-10% off.

Maybe it would be more difficult then I am imagining but if you were to go with the premium model now and get all the nice luxury features you want and then as you start adding power and taking it to the track you can upgrade the brakes as you feel necessary.
And more importantly, you can add an aftermarket LSD. Maybe there is no aftermarket support yet but I'm sure a company like Quaife will design one eventually, and probably one superior to the OEM piece anyway. The Brembo's are really nice but seem awfully expensive (from a replacement perspective) and probably not necessary unless you're going to the track and even then, an aftermarket upgrade would probably suffice.
To me, it seems like upgrading the brakes and LSD would be easier and probably cheaper then adding a sunroof, nav, and leather. Just a thought...
jonjon72
05-24-2012, 09:45 AM
Food for thought. For the Quaife LSD, your looking at around $1300-1400. After market Brembo compatible parts are no where near the $5000 that a dealership would charge. You can get front and rear Hawk pads for under $375 bills and rotors (front and rear - slotted) for $450. Labour costs of course differs from place to place.
Here is a link that will give you an idea on whats available.

one of the reasons insurance is so cheap for hyundais is because they're ****ing HARD to break into. my friend locked his keys inside his rented elantra a few weeks back and it took CAA a good 25 minutes to get inside, and they ended up scratching the **** outta the door & setting off the alarm while trying. The guy said if it were any honda or toyota he'd be in and out in 30 seconds. Aparently the absolute hardest cars to steal are Mini's. if you lock your keys inside you're SOL and it needs to get towed to the dealer....you simply cant get inside without smashing a window, and even then you set off the alarm and it wont start.

This is exactly what I was thinking. Plus, imagine the cost to do the brakes on a Brembo model!? I'm not even slightly mechanically inclined so I'd imagine this would be a dealer-job unless I find someone trustworthy enough to touch my car.
I put down a deposit on a 2013 R-Spec in black (mid-August delivery), but if I come across the right 2.0T Premium, I can easily swap out and use my ($500 refundable) deposit on that instead.

Lol, I know of this firsthand. When I bought my Mini used it only had one key. I lost the keys on moving day and had to wait till BMW ordered a laser-cut key from Germany... was in a rental for almost 2 weeks (paid for by myself of course) until it actually came in. There was no way CAA could break into the car and get me proof of ownership, so a dealership employee would have had to come with me to my apartment to verify ownership (paperwork was in the car).
