View Full Version : Toronto drivers at their finest

With my dashcam rolling, I had the pleasure of recording a couple of Toronto douchebag drivers at their absolute finest.

0:40 - Civic almost clips the van while making a stupid lane change
1:45 - I get cut off by some idiot in a white van.

The story is the guy in the white van was riding my ass while I was in the right lane. What he hoped to achieve by doing this I have no idea. I brake check him until he swings around and passes me and he retaliates by cutting me off pretty bad.

At that moment I realized why many of you went with the high quality cam to catch plates. Otherwise, I would have reported him.

If anyone has dash cam videos to share, feel free to post them up.

Looks like you brake checked him too hard / too much in the video from 1:40 and onwards(or maybe I'm tripping). I never brake check as it almost always pisses off the other drivers on the highway. Seeing as that is a work van, they wouldn't mind trading paint scrapes and then telling their boss they squeezed through a tight alley as an excuse.

But I do understand a lot of Toronto drivers are horrid, there's not a city with all drivers being calm and all. Next time just let him ride your ass until he passes you with a safe distance than a dangerous lane change. If someone's up my ass like that I could care less at all as maybe there could be a cop that randomly shows up and stops that driver :)

For dashcams, I've always wanted an HD one but they look too bulky. I'm going to try to find a spy cam one that has constant 12v power

It really depends on what your budget is. Some get the expensive BlackVue one, some use their iphone and the "Witness Driving" app, but I just bought a cheapo ebay one.

The poor goose I saw the other day, crossing the highway, tuned into an explosion of feathers. He never saw it coming.

Kinda wish I had a camera installed for the wheel, (not tire) that cut me off yesterday. Wish I could have watched the PT Cruiser come to a screaming halt without a wheel

It's a toyota... what do you expect? They are all turtle-speed in Toronto, especially bland 90's (often in an ugly beige colour)... I find it very difficult not to discriminate toyotas with bad drivers lol

Get the Blackvue. sure you can get a camera for a lot less but the quality is great, has motion sensor for parking mode and GPS mapping. Add all the customization in the options and its the best out there. Plus its compact. Doesn't block you view and depending on where you position it on your windshield, quite hidden from bystanders.

The Blackvue can be hard wired into the car. As well, it has a motion detector, so it does not constantly draw power, only when needed.

Parking mode is where the camera detects any motion or impact to the vehicle. You can set the sensitivity as well. Basically it is hired wired so it is using minimal power to be on standby. When it detects impact/movement, the camera will switch on for 1-3 min (you can adjust that as well). The power module will shut down the camera or cut power if needed to conserve the battery.

Looked into that thread and there are a few people (about 7) with defective cameras that are allegedly from the heat and Parking camera.

Anyone able to chime in on that? I was looking for a good dash cam and this seems perfect, but if it has issues with parking cams I'll stick to a $30 one. Also got to find a way to purchase this locally, not buying from ebay ever again :/

I have a BlackVue and I do agree that they do have a few problems, especially overheating. The other problems can be solved by reformatting the MicroSD card every week. Of the 250+ that participated in the group buy, less than 10 have had major problems/issues.

Not many proven alternatives, there are a few other units that, on paper, are better.

4% of the units had issues, that's not bad. On anything mass produced there's going to be lemons, or defective units, a low percentage like that isn't bad. (I assumed 10/250 had issues)

Is the overheating only an issue because of the extreme weather we've been having lately?

Well, the weather sure doesn't help lol. The units get hot enough by itself, but if its in direct sunlight or if it has no ventilation, the BlackVue will either shut down or start artifacting (like a video card) in the video. Unfortunately it's a flaw and there doesn't seem to be any fix, besides parking under shade or using A/C.

^ That happens a lot at that intersection.

If you ever drive Heron west onto Bronson North, there's another one where that would happen all the time. People hesitate so much, and they decide to join the traffic when it's too late. I've had to slam on my brakes a few times. I'd be able to record similar instances.

Also, student drivers love to panic... someone was doing a 3 point turn in my neighbourhood and I was trying to get through, as soon as I got "close", she started to panic. (Even though I was like 3 car lengths away from where she was doing her 3 point turn)

And you mean to tell me that you drive by my house every morning and you don't even bring me coffee? Geez! You suck, Ash!

Shouldn't instructors instruct their students to stay the **** out of the passing lanes if they insist on driving 55km/h?

It's pretty sad that I have to re-think my driving techniques to accommodate idiot drivers. I now have to pass on the curb-side lane, I have to watch for people slamming their brakes every time the crosswalk sign flashes, and my biggest peeve - learn how to accelerate at the slowest pace possible because you're stuck behind two people that take 2-city blocks just to reach 60km/h

Yeah, but too bad the OPP don't enforce anyone to adhere too it! These truck drivers 'nowadays' are complete morons also, they hog the left lane, sometimes driving two or three abreast, when the law states clearly trucks are not allowed in the fast lane whatsoever, except in certain situations...It burns my ass that the OPP do nothing about this, as it causes pandemonium on the highways sometimes. oh man the people who enter the on ramp slow to a friken CRAWL when theyre suppose to accelerate....people just forcing theyre car in front of you and people preventing you from lane changing (<sometimes this isnt avoidable so its understandable sometimes). not to mention grannies in fast lanes who brake HARD all the time when theres nothing in front of them...jeez i know we gotta share the road but i swear this is gonna kill me one day if these people dont learn to drive with others.

What are you questioning exactly, the fact he was driving partially on the wrong side of the road (crossing the yellow line) or that he jumped the light making a left? I think the cops would have enough to charge him on both cases and both being serious charges.

oh man the people who enter the on ramp slow to a friken CRAWL when theyre suppose to accelerate

This drives me insane lol. 401/Kennedy Westbound ramp... it's a short acceleration lane but people don't ACCELERATE. By the time they're merging, they're only going 60-70km/h.

Here's my contributions for last month.

Just a suggestion you ran a Red (aside from being stuck in the intersection because of the close call). You entered the intersection when it turned Yellow and you could have easily come to a stop behind the line.

Thanks for the pro-tip, but the reason I didn't stop and reverse was because there was a car behind me, was actually riding pretty close. Again, I probably should of stopped, I don't disagree.

Also this was on the 427 a few nights ago, pretty scary stuff:

Driving in the left lane, vehicle in the far right lane is stopped completely with hazards, car swerves to miss it, lands in my lane. Nothing I could do, brake and swerve and pray.

Useless without pictures?

100% yes. It irritates me when I see drivers push the light.

+1 to Coriolis for admitting fault.

its worse when people actually brake on an onramp when they have no reason to except them not feeling confident in their vehicles.
Most cars are very capable of going atleast 10-15 kph over the suggested onramp speed ( except for extreme conditions like snow , ice and wet roads in general)

401 west expressway onto the dvp (south). people in the right lane absolutely wait for the verry veeeerrrrrrrryyyyyy last minute to merge in. cutting off the big ass line as if they had the right to go over onto the shoulder and drive past as if they got right of way. ugh!! pisses me off so bad. whats worse is that they usually have a fast moving line behind them that literally becomes a passing lane on the right shoulder... cutting off access to the dvp completely.

courteous driving! smooth motion! zipper fashion merging!! common toronto!! jeez

Technically, is that legal? Seen a lot of these...

This guy would be charged with advancing the light. This is one of the biggest traffic fines in terms of dollar amount.

Technically they do have the right of way...regardless of how dumb or slow they are people already travelling on the highway in the right lane are supposed to either a) move into the middle lane to make room for cars merging onto the highway or b) slow down or speed up to allow the merging vehicle space to merge in front or behind them.

the problem here is inexperience and lack of confidence on the part of the merging driver...but also the inconsiderate/oblivious behavior of a good portion of Toronto drivers who won't let people merge they just keep chugging along and don't give 2 shits enough to let the person merge...like you said it is supposed to be seamless smooth merging like a zipper...IF people followed the rules...

You shouldn't have a be a super aggressive or super skilled race car driver to have the ability to merge onto the highway.

totally agree! people not allowing other people to merge are just as bad IMO and twice as likely to cause an accident. however, when traffic is slow and barely moving. people in the merging lane blow past the end of their lane and beyond way faster than everyone else. this leads other people to think "oh, if they can do it i can do it too". at that point all you got is a pile of cars and lock up on the road.

they dont really teach road organization skills AT ALL. they just teach how to avoid and control

Agreed...there needs to be better driver education...or harder testing...I read the entire drivers handbook...but I no lots of people who didn't and basically winged their tests and passed...come on really? If you can pass without studying then we have a problem

There is no Highway Traffic Act offence called "advacing the light" and therefore it is not a large fine.

The driver in question here could have been charged with a number of offences, but a surefire conviction on probably only one: Improper use of divided highway - for clipping the yellow line during his turn. He *could* have been charged with careless, but it's unlikely a conviction would have resulted.

What the driver did was dangerous, but not technically illegal. His defence would be that he made a left turn on a green light with (in his opinion) enough room between himself and oncoming traffic to do so safely.
