Hello fellow TM3ers. I devised an interesting game to see how creative we can all get.
OBJECTIVE:
You have wom One Million dollars, but it expires in ONE day (so maybe I guess in the form of a general debt card or temporary visa). You have to spend ALL of it.
Simple rules/guidelines:
- You cannot buy something just to sell it into real money
- You can buy an investment (i.e. buy stocks, or buy a house to rent out)
- You have to spend ALL of it (generally rounded of course, doesn't have to be to the exact dime)
- Buying something to gift is okay (like buying your girlfriend/boyfriend a new car)
- Considering the time limit, the list must be purchasable in one day's time (so if you buy a boat, that's assuming you already have your license, or you can't say you'd fly to five different countries to buy different houses because it would take too long). But you can still buy something that requires time to come, like mods for a car, as long as it's already purchased.
Show your shopping list. For example;
- Item 1: approx $500,000
- Item 2: approx $200,000
- Item 3: approx $50,000
- Item 4: approx $250,000
I hope to see some fun creative answers :) I'll post mine in a bit!

Where you gonna buy a cottage for 100 grand? Yellowknife?
And I don't understand how anyone would find a house in 1 day. There's a lot of shitty houses out there for $700k
Unless you go buy a brand new cookie cutter house in the suburbs, no offense to those that live in the suburbs...
Cool thread though, to see how people would spend their money
Edit.
1. Pay off my remaining $200k mortgage
2. buy $800k in savings bonds

My cottage my family currently owns ( manitoulin island ) was bought for $26,000 15 years ago on a 2 acre lot. We tore it down and built a 2 story house including a basement, so that is where an $80 000 cottage comes from.
and @stevenma188: the 300 000 would be split between dad, mom and sister $100 000 a piece. Sorry for not clearing that up more.

I don't know where you get your prices, but if u spend $700k on 1 condo, then your getting yourself a bad deal. Lol.
$700K on a condo is not a bad deal, not in downtown toronto and not for something with 2+ bedrooms
Loki doesn't own a cottage since I'm the first one of my family to live here. I have been looking recently though and for anything decent on the water you start around $250k. This is in the minden area.

I guess that's ok if you're looking at 2+ beds, but 1+1 for renting is perfectly affordable.

even the prices of the 1+1's have gotten pretty ridiculous over the past 10 years.
my best friend and his wife just sold their 1 bed + den at Bloor and Spadina last week for $450k. That's pretty crazy considering in 2000 you could get something pretty nice for around $200k.
But as far as investments go, the 1 bed + den is what everyone wants. solid investment.

$1 million doesn't lead to much creativity, sadly.
$1 million @ 1.5% (typical 1-2 year GIC rate) = 15k per year. Certainly not enough to quit the day job. Great for paying off debts so you're no longer in the hole, but not great for "growing wealth". I guess I'm boring. If I had an extra $1 million, nothing would change.

your spending may not necessarily change but you'd be alot more comfortable financially, unless you're a millionaire now. In which case you should be on a different forum, unless you're looking on tips to turn a speed3 into a lawnmower to cut the grass at your mansion.

No, I totally agree. I'd be much happier with a million in the account for being more comfortable and secure, but it's not as much money as people think it is.
If I had a million dollars, I'd still drive my 3, given the income level doesn't hugely increase with the extra million. You can't buy a mansion for a million. Heck, you can just manage to buy and renovate a good 2-bedroom condo downtown for that money.

200,000 buy gold bars
Only if they're really small gold bars... A standard gold bar is over 400 ounces (yes, I had to look it up.)
- Buy the furnishing for the home (not from Ikea): $10,000
When I moved to my current place, I told myself: "No more Ikea crap."
That was until the GF saw how much the Italian glass & steel dining table I wanted was. (I thought $2500 for a dining table was "reasonable".) In the end, I got a lot of Ikea crap, and I ended up crying like a girl about how I'm still stuck with Ikea crap. At least I got my sofa before she interfered! Point is though, 10k isn't enough to furnish a house nicely. Not even enough to furnish a condo well.
Anyway, to get back into the spirit of the game, if I can't invest it, I'd buy a Mooney Acclaim S (http://www.mooney.com/acclaim-type-s/overview.html). Then I'd spend the rest (whatever little is left) on buying hanger space at an airport, and training to make sure I don't kill myself in it. I'd NEVER have to take a domestic flight in North America ever again.

LOL, not sure where you're buying your drugs and alcohol, but 15 k should cover enough for about 50 people. As for food? Anyone whos too good for pizza isn't invited anyway.
As for the math error Ami, cut out the designer then. I'll stick my bachelor sized furniture in my new half a million dollar house and call it a day. My guests can sleep on the hardwood. :P
