I'm not fussy about brands or viscosity. If I have the oil changed at the dealer it gets Mazda's 5W20, I believe packaged by Petro-Canada. If I'm changing the oil myself my first choice is Petro-Canada synthetic. I've used 5W30 in the past but have switched to 0W40. But I have also used Castrol Syntec 5W20 and Pennzoil Platinum 5W30 if they are on sale.

Honestly, changing the oil and filter regularly at recommended intervals is more important than what oil you use. Even running cheap Canadian Tire 5W20 conventional oil, if you change the oil and filter every 8,000 km the engine will last longer than the rest of the car in most cases. I use synthetic oil because I stopped using a Mac but still feel the need for something to fill me with a sense of smug superiority.

Why make two threads about essentially the same thing? Your other thread has a vast amount of information about different grades of oil.

because i want to keep this car for a long time. rather spend the little extra on preventative maintenance then a new engine or drivetrain.

Thier is no point in running synthetic oil if your changing your oil every 4000km

I recently had my oil change at Jimmy and he noted that 2 stroke is better for winter. However, for summer - it's best to use 4 stroke, since it can get hot and there will be better protection for your engine. So, if you run on 2 stroke - use it in winter. Not as many strokes are needed in the winter.

Because that was specific to the Mazda 0w-20 oil. I wanted to know if there were OTHER recommendations from users on this board.

But thanks for those who responded definitely helpful.

Sorry didn't mean to sound like an ass. I just found there to be quite a bit of good information on all types of synthetics (ie. group III vs. group IV and such) not just about mazda's 0w-20 in your other thread.

A lot of good general information in there is all. When it comes down to it, the difference between brands of oil that are in the same group probably wouldn't perform noticeably differently. So the choice is really yours, you just have to decide on a group of oil (assuming you're looking into synthetic) you want to use and pick whatever brand you like.

I disagree. This can only be a positive thing habit for the car. I used to do it every 3,000 with castrol edge on my 96 corolla.

i did use mazda 5w20, then synth 0W20 and now castrol edge titanium 0w20 synth, change it every 4 months or 8,000 K, using castrol now in both cars, but both 2010 3s followed the same oil change from 5w20 to the now castrol.

I disagree with you... If your going to change your oil every 3,000km then regular oil will do... Your wasting your money running synthetic oil period!!!

Detergents present in new oil remove gunk and build up from the old oil. During this period wear increases, and this can be verified by checking particulates in the oil. After the initial boil off, the oil forms a new varnishing/protecting layer on the components. Once the oil stability decreases after something like 8000km for regular and 20,000km for synthetics, the amount of metal particulates in the oil begin to increase again at an increasing rate. This is when the oil needs to be replaced.

Sorry for hijacking thread.

lol aris, stop antagonizing people who run syns for short intervals. It's not the most economical thing, sure, but it's bit of an exaggeration to call it a waste. Cold start flow is enough to justify running a syn over conventional regardless of interval.

There are far more benefits to synthetic oil than simply extended service intervals. It's still superior for numerous reasons regardless of how often you change it.

Not surprising. Diesel oils with API C* ratings have much higher additive package concentrations and much higher TBN than API S* rated passenger car oils. In engines like ours, after 5,000 km Rotella T or the Petro-Can 0W40 I run have probably just worn down to levels comparable to a new from the bottle 5W30.

For the last few years Eneos 5w-20 synthetic. Have used others in the past such as Redline and Amsoil. Eneos burns noticeably less between oil changes.

After reading the sticky "Oil Info. Thread" and various Forums I've been using German Castrol 0/30. Less oil consumption in my 2.3 than w/ 5/20 and good reports from Blackstone Labs. using 12,000km.(about 7,500 mile) change intervals. Blackstone suggests longer change intervals but 12,000km. is enough for me.

Harbour Rat

Yeah, used oil analysis is good and all but my theory on extending drain intervals is to go far as possible while still maintaining an acceptable level of protection, not to go until the oil is used up. If Blackstone says you could go a little further then you've probably gone far enough. Over the life of the car, say 10-12 years at most, changing the oil at 7,500 miles instead of say 10,000 miles will probably add up to less than $1000, which is not a big deal spread over that length of time. Consider it an investment in peace of mind.

I change mine out at 10k (kilometers) intervals (MAX) using GC 0W-30, and have been for the last 90k with absolutely no oil loss between changes! (atleast not noticeable from a stick reading). Engine runs smooth, quiet and clean. From close inspection of the condition of the drained oil; smell, feel, colour etc; I could probably safely go to 12 or 14k, but 10k is far enough for me. If I remember I'll be taking a sample from my next drain and get it to the labs, as I'm quite curious how well this oil is doing, and I'm at 180k with this engine.
