Hi all,

So tuesday night, I was driving around Mississauga when suddenly my car started making noises like a dirt bike. I thought this sounded strange so I pulled over into a gas station. It was really late at night and there wasn't much I could do. I called a tow-truck and got it towed to a friend of my dad's shop. I get a ride there the next day and he is diagnosing the car. While doing so he checks the oil levels and ... barely any oil left. He performs an oil change on the car and while doing so, literally 0.5 liters of oil came out. It was black, and had a consistency of water. At this point, I call up Lubrico (I had a 12 month/unlimited kms warranty with them). They advise to get it towed to their shop. I did so around 12pm. I get a call at 3pm saying the upper and bottom half of the engine are done. They need to be replaced and it's actually covered up to $3200 on warranty. All they need to proceed is proof of maintenance since I've owned the car. Obtained receipts from Achilles Mazda in Milton, and faxed them to Lubrico. I get a call about 30 minutes later and they tell me all is fine. The used engine they found had 59,xxx km on it and it will arrive on Monday.

My question to TM3 - After all is said and done... Would you sell the car, or keep it in hopes that nothing is wrong with the new engine?

My dad is advising me to sell the car but I really don't want to.

A few years ago when my 1994 civic engine had to be replaced. We got the new engine and kept the car for many years. I never faced issues regarding the engine. The car lasted me 7 years after with no problems.

hey man, i had something similar happen to my car but in my case my piston arms were bend. I ended up having to change the the entire engine. So they found an engine at a local scraper with like 39000 km on it for like 600-700 bucks. And with the engine and install costs it ran me like 2000 bucks. And ive been driving my car for over a year now with the new engine and everything has be fine. But i too was in ur situation where i was told to scrap the car. You gotta look into how much you've but into getting the car and etc. I decided i'd rather spend the extra money and save my car. Best choice by far. Good luck tho.

Wow, 2000$ for the instal + engine ToM!! THat's an amazing price!!!!

As for mournir, was there any warning before this happened? Did your oil pressure or CEL light come on at any time? Did you have a recent oil change and perhaps they didn't put the oil plug back on properly?

+1 I'd be very curious to know why this happened in the first place.

Also, no reason to dump the car just because it will have a newish engine. Have a shop you trust check then engine over to make sure it's in good condition and they didn't get you a PoS motor. At least have a compression test done on it.

The shop doing it is top of the line and takes care of Ferraris and Lamborghinis on a regular basis. They will be thoroughly checking over the engine the make sure its good, and to add are giving me 3 months of warranty on it.

If you have full faith in this shop, then you shouldn't be worried about having a new motor. If the motor is in great shape it will only make your car last longer.

Good luck!

We've had engines seize on two cars and replaced the engines with used ones.
The first was a Toyota Camry SE where we had the oil changed by Mr. Lube...yes, I know, anyway they put the wrong plug in and the oil drained out while on the way to the airport to catch a plane. Mr. Lube manned up, accepted responsibility which we did not expect and found a used engine and had it installed by Toyota. That car ran for many years after.
The second was our 1995 Acura Integra where it just failed and we dropped a used Japanese 100,000km engine into it. It was running better than ever until our daughter was t-boned (she's ok) Now it's not running at all:( But that's not the fault of the engine:)

No warning. No oil pressure or CEL light. I was just about due for an oil change. Had it done at 87,000km and the recommended time for me to do it was 95,000km. I was at about 94,500km. The oil change was done at a Mazda dealership using OEM oil. From now on, OEM oil no more.

I was going by what Mazda had recommended and they put a sticker on my car showing to change it 8k later. Obviously I know now, from experience, no matter what that sticker says to change it every 4-5k.

It's 8,000km or every 4 months whichever comes first.

Like mentioned above Mazda oil is 8k or 4 months. If you get it changed elsewhere I would go with 5k or 3 months unless you are using synthetic.

Thanks for backing up what I thought to be true. Oddly enough, even though it said 8k, I barely had any oil left at all in the engine as stated in the original post.

UPDATE: The new engine with 59k turned out to be bad. Looks like they are procuring a new engine (hopefully in good condition also) tomorrow. Will update the mileage on it when I know. Also turns out clutch/flywheel life was 50% and they recommended to replace so that will be getting done as well.

I stick with doing an oil change every 5,000 km for conventional oil. I think Castrol recommends minimum 3,000 miles and maximum 5,000 miles which is 5,000 to 8,000 km. I guess Mazda chose the maximum number. I've had guys at Mazda dealerships saying their oil change interval is a little too long.

"As a general rule of thumb, change your motor oil and oil filter every 3,000 miles or every 3 months, whichever comes first. This strategy will provide superior engine protection and long engine life. (Be certain to check your owner's manual for special conditions and do not exceed warranty recommendations.)"
