View Full Version : Multi-lane Stop Sign - What's the rule?

So I recently moved and now I have a all-stop intersection that has 2 lanes each side. (Total of 8 lanes heading into the stop sign)
What's the rule here?
Is it still whoever stops first gets to go? Because there are times when, on the same side, cars arrive differently and one car will go while other stays or tries to floor it to go with the car that's in motion.
Thanks!

Yes, it's the car that stops first, and the general rule about the car in the right lane(s) also applies. A 4 way stop is a 4 way stop, no matter how many lanes, cars, tractors, horses, or zambonis.
Only time you can ignore a stop sign is on private property.

Does that technically include unassumed roads?

I see.. that makes sense.
So let's say there's car 1,2,3.
1&2 are driving from same side and 3 is not.
If 1 arrives, then 3 arrives, then 2 at the stop sign. Then 1 will go then 3 will go then 2? Because a lot of the times I see 2 trying to go because 1 is going and 3 can't go until 1 finishes crossing. (sorry i almost got hit first day and trying to make sure I am following it correctly. Reading this I am sure I had the right to proceed but i guess not everyone follows it well enough)

If the timing is close, 2 can go too. But if 1 is already going through and 2 hasn't stopped then they have to wait.

Yup. You do need to come to a full stop first. Often you both end up waiting for someone else to clear the intersection, which does mean you will be able to proceed at the same time as the first car. But watch for people who got there first who are making turns into the lane you will end up in across the intersection. Plus, you need to avoid squishing pedestrians and cyclists who can be hard to see when your view is blocked by other cars.
My rule of thumb is basically this: If I can proceed without blocking who was there first I'll do so. With busy intersections if everyone does this it can really help keep traffic flowing.

Also - if there are vehicles going East/West and the other North/South - and they stop at the same time - the vehicle to the Right goes first
the only exception too all rules is if the person with the right of way has a pedestrian crossing
If 2 on-coming vehicles approach the 4-way stop at the same time - the person going straight through has right of way over the person making a turn

I'd just be really careful, even at 4 way 1 lane crossings you never know. The road leading to FMP on the way to nextmod from 7th scares the shit outta me

Excellent point - however too much hesitation on your part can be really frustrating and dangerous to other drivers

Question.. If you are at a 2 way stop. Which person goes first if they arrive at the same time?
Impressive

I've always gone by the rule that the person to the right of the other person will go first. If they are facing one another, then whoever is going straight will get RoW over individuals who are turning.

Everyone loves this one... they forget you can still be charged under the Criminal Code for dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, that is a federal offence and has nothing to do with the HTA

Lol how is it dangerous operation of a vehicle if I run a stop sign at your local strip mall in the middle of the night at 15km/h. HTA doesn't apply and the officer would have no grounds to prove what constitutes dangerous operation.

I didn't say it was a charge for that very specific instance... I just said they can easily charge you with a criminal offence for being an idiot on private property
Just because it is private property doesn't mean you are exempt from driving like a responsible adult
That's my point

Ok, I think we can all infer the obvious (with regards to dengerois operation). Are you also going to tell me not to do mexico runs or drink and drive on private property among other things?

which will not stand in court because there is no standing proof it was dangerous to run that stop sign, as the stop sign is not registered with the city. Furthermore the cop will be the laugh of the locker room for the next 2 years lol
