So here is the deal...I have 215/45/17's mounted on my stock 6.5 inch rim that need replacing real soon. The rain grooves are getting too shallow for heavy rain and it would be safer to swap them for new tires. But I also do track/autocross so there is still some useable tread left on the tires so I want to put it on my 7.5 inch track rims.

I plan to put another set of 215/45/17's on my stock rims since I cant run wider rims in stock class for CASC autocross. I plan to use my 7.5 inch rims for lapping and non-CASC autocross events.

I know they will fit, but will I encounter problems with overstressing the tire?

you should be fine, as long as the pressures are good. you saw my tires on my 17x7 and im running 225. theyre big and kinda chunky.
i plan on running 215 as my next tire setup. so 215 on a 7.5 shouldnt be much of a difference. in my opinion, 215 should the correct size for 17x7 so half an inch shouldnt hurt

Should be fine, each sectional width has a range of rim widths that it can fit. It can also depend on the tire itself, Tire Rack lists these specs for each tire if you want to check it of the set that you have.

7.5 in is always gonna be in the range for a 215 tire though.

Tire in question is the Dunlop StarSpecs.

I used to run 225/40/18s on a 7.5 width rim on the track all day. np. go for it.
