1st gen hatch - 5th door(hatch) won't open

I'm sorry if this has been asked before, I checked other threads and couldn't find anything helpful.

My rear door or hatch will not open, I popped the little cover off to see if I could see or feel a pull cord.. but I could only feel loose pieces of plastic dangling, it also seems that my inner latch is broken too, I'm not sure if its manditory to have a emergency release in a hatch?
Just wondering if this a common problem and if anyone has some helpful tips or advice?

There is a plastic cap on the inside of the rear hatch, pop it off and turn the handle.
This will open the hatch.. good luck, I hope it works..

Yeah, I tried that, the steel cable has broke off and when I turn the inner latch.. still nothing.

I think my subs smashed the inside handle of the hatch and crushed the the handle inwards.
Any other suggestions?.. I really want to avoid the dealership.

try and find a 1st gen hatch at a wrecker and take all the pieces you need for the latch mechanism and emergency release

oh boy just went threw this hassle, when you pop the cover off you can see the mechinism, there is a little grey bare metal looking peice, push that left (if your in back seat looking at your hatch) and it will open, pain in the ass yes i know i rode around with no cover for like 3 weeks, too much base loss,

i replaced my whole mechinism its a 2 min install, 60 dollar part, i got a hook up and got one free, if you go to doms scrap yard they have mazda 3 hatchs in the lot, i was gonna go there but got one else where for free,

i can give you my broken one if yours isnt the same peice broken as mine and you can try and frankienstien them togethter, ill be at m.o.m on sunday i can take it off for you and try and make one of the two work? if you go that is,
