I have a base 2012 Mazda Sport GX without the connivence package so it doesn't come with tweeters. I had read that in past models the wiring was actually there hidden behind the sail panel so I decided to peel back my sail panels to see for myself. From what I can tell it looks like the speaker wire is indeed there and just plugs into an empty plastic socket. I was thinking about ordering the OEM sails and tweeters and just plugging them in but was curious if anyone saw any potential problems with this plan. I know the hard core audiophiles will say I should just get all new speakers but I am not really interested in that. With this approach it looks like I can get tweeters which I assume sound at least "okay" and keep everything oem for about ~$75.
Thoughts?

it should work just fine as long as the wiring and plugs are there, which you say they are.... those wires are spliced into the main speaker wires... crossover is built into the tweeters, so it is a plug and play fit

+1 :)
As theman says, it is pre-wired and its very easy to add them. The plugs are very small and all you do is snap the stock 25w tweeters in place, plug them in, snap the sail panel back in and presto!! ur done ;)
If you want an idea of where the retaining clips are for the sail panels, check my sigline, and you'll find a link to my ice upgrade. In my writeup I took shots of where these are located and you'll prolly find a few other goodies as well. Like where the retaining clips for the door panels are too ;)
hope this helps.

They are $60 from the dealership and you just pull off the sail panel, clip in the tweeter and the put he new one in.

The Man: Thanks for the heads up regarding the crossover being built into the tweeters - good to know!
Zoomahh: Awesome ice upgrade. Your pictures regarding the sail clip locations will be handy as I wasn't sure where the third clip was when I was looking for the wires. I better get myself a plastic opening tool as I suspect that will help prevent breaking any of those clips.
Hyperion: You know I never thought to check with the dealer if I could order the parts from them. The website I found would require ordering the following:
Inner cover w/Tweeter, w/o high grade Left = $9.98
Inner cover w/Tweeter, w/o high grade Right = $25.94
Tweeter w/o high grade Left = $18.15
Tweeter w/o high grade Right = $18.15
Total = $72.22 plus shipping from the US so I suspect it will be closer to $100.
I wonder if the dealer price will be close to that. Do you have a Mazda dealer in the GTA that you recommend for ordering parts?
Thanks everyone!

that's not what you need... those are the tweeters are part of the sail covers as one unit... the tweeters can be purchased separately but not the other way around
you need JUST the sails, which comes with the tweeters like I already said
part numbers are BBM3-69-11YC and BBM3-69-17YC
they're surprisingly cheap... you're better off getting it from any of the affiliated dealers that give club discounts

Thanks for correction and for providing me with the correct part numbers. It certainly would have been dissipating orders for parts I didn't need :)
Joe, aka flipdaddy, at Mazda of Toronto will give you the best price. Give him a call.
Let me know how much it costs and how it went as I didn't realize how easy it is to add the oem tweeters/panel.
