If every wrench you use slips, then the problem is with you and not the wrenches. I've never had an issue with either the cap or the belt.

with the cartridge filter yes, you need a nvery specific cap or a claw. since mine is already rounded i use the claw. even with new cars with the cartridge filter, the crap canadian tire sells is useless. the strap is useless. ive had my experience with these tools with many different types of cars. however, for the canister type filter, the strap works, but i dont use it anymore as its unreliable compared to other tools out there for the same price. the strp works for you? good for you. remember, were working with oil here. things get slippery

Variety Tools at Sheridan Mall, lower level. Mall intersection is Jane and Wilson. You can probably get it cheaper there than at the dealership. And they don't sell crappy Motormaster garbage.

I've been using the cheap canadian tire metal strap one for years on my mazdas and it has never failed me. If you're not taking the splash shield off, yes there will be problems, but honestly there is nothing wrong with it. if it is slipping too much, you are either overtightening, or you have no idea how to use tools and should not be DIY'ing
It also helps if it is not coated in oil, oil is a lubricant after all.

at the prices for the wrench + the cap, you're already halfway towards the cost of a spinon filter conversion... might as well convert now! doesn't make sense to keep that cartridge filter crap!

which filter is good to go on? i heard some people were afraid that it might get caught when they go over a steep bump

why would it get caught when the genpus come with spinon filters? and all 2.0l genwons have spinon filters too
just go get a purolator pureone filter, cheap and good... better than the filter you buy from the dealer, which is a rebadged regular purolator

lowered cars that occasionally hit the road. some people use aftemarket filters that are too long and what not. yea the 2.0 have the spin on filters and some people on mazda3forums have had after market filters hit the road. no puncture but crushed it. oem filters are actually one of the best filters you can get for the 3, at least thats what a lot of people think.

These must've been people driving without the skid plate on. Their own fault for not using the skid plate, that's what it's there for... And I'd imagine they'd have to be really low.

yea heard they were pretty low. but i dont think having a skid plate i would stop it though...i mean...its plastic and thin. to me thats actually an air dam. keeps the air flowing smoothly under the car. also protects the under side from rocks and stuff that might get picked up on the road.

I have used Motorcraft FL-400S filters on my 2.0L for the last couple of oil changes. This is longer than the OEM spin-on filter. It clears the splash shield by ~10-15 mm and does not hang down as far as the oil pan or the lowest part of the rad and AC condenser. If something were to whack the filter I expect it would damage enough other important stuff that the oil filter would not be the worst problem.

WAS the best
NOT the best any more... like I said, it is a rebadge plain jane purolator.... the aftermarket purolator pure one is a step up above the regular purolator and is regarded as one of the best oil filters you can buy
so all you're getting now is the mazda name printed on a filter that they can charge you twice as much as the same cheap thing you can find at the store.... it's not a bad or crappy filter, just unremarkable and overpriced

the old british made mazda filters were truely good... I still have a small stash of them I am slowly going through (thanks to the 16000km oil changes)

don't believe me? cut one open and see for yourself... or go look for the pics yourself!

I think he's talking about a spin-on.

Anyone know where to get Purolator filters? I'm intrigued now... I haven't seen them at the common stores like CT or PartSource and we don't carry them where I work.

Yes, sometimes different brands of filter spec'd for the same application will be vary slightly in size. I am not 100% sure but I think the Fram PH/TG/XG 3600, which cross over with the FL-400S is long enough to contact the splash shield.

partsource is actually a branch off of canadian tire....so dont expect to see anything too different from your local canadian tire.

Yeah I know they are. But they do carry more lines of parts than Canadian Tire does.

According to the Purolator website the only store that sells them that's in Canada is WalMart, every other store they listed was American.

i think i might of saw purolator in my local canadian tire... they got more stuff in that one store for some reason... ill see if i can hit it up and see what they got. partsource is an automotive specialty store from canadian tire that expands its product lines so yea, they get more ahaha. the canadian tire i got to usually has things that the canadian tire catalogues dont carry.
