2010 Mazda 3 GX, manual.
So when I put it in reverse and give it gas, I hear a high pitched... whine?... when it's going. It's coming from the engine compartment.
Is this normal? I don't hear anything like that when I'm in any of the other gears.

The slightly longer explanation:
Reverse is the only gear that is straight cut (spur cut) instead of helical cut. Hence you only hear the whine in reverse.

Yes, we learned about this at the Centennial's trade school. It's exactly why reverse is noisier than any other gears.

i think that might be another thing with the clutch pack. at least i know some of the older civics do it in pretty much all gears....
