:(need some advice please.this is my story bought a 2006 mazda3 hb 2.3l engine a few months ago.after about a month of driving engine started to make a knocking sound .take it to a mechanic,he looks at it ,listen to the noise with his scope and told me right there and then, that it is the VVT ACTUATOR.SAID IT WAS A COMMON PROBLEM IN THE 2.3L ENGINES.ALSO SAID HE WILL HAVE TO CHANGE THE TIMING CHAIN AS WELL.PARTS WITH LABOR COST ME 1200 BUCKS .after the work engine sounds fine .drive car for a week fine, then one morning after starting the knocking sound came back on ,but after five minutes it stop.works fine fro the rest of the day.next day same thing ,after couple of minutes it stop.
Take it back to the mechanic,he looks at it and said that it might be my lifters/vale now, but after removing the head he told me that the vvt has failed again and i will need a new one.cost 600bucks and this time he will do it for free.i currently park my noisy car and need HELP ON WHAT TO DO NEXT.

Find a new mechanic.
There is a warranty on parts, even used from a scrap yard. It seems to me like he's a little shady.

the mazda dealership might be your best bet, might get a little costly but they will know exactly what the problem is

the VVT actuator making noise IS a common problem
there's a recall on the turbo engines, but not the non-turbos :(

They didn't have the turbo engine in 2006, you would have bought a Mazdaspeed3.
