Hey everyone,

As I looked under the hood of new Mazda3 today, I saw some cotton near the engine. Upon taking off the engine cover, it was ripped with cotton (or whatever it is) coming out.

I'll head to the dealership tomorrow afternoon. In the meantime, should I clean it out and continue driving without the cover? Pics can be seen here:

Thanks!

Folder is empty. Are you talking about the insulation underneath the plastic cover? Not a big deal if it is ripped. I ripped mine out because it keeps holding in dust and dirt, making the engine bay dirty.

Yup, its the insulation coming out.

It's heat insulation so I'm sure it's fine to leave in there if you want to and even put the cover back on. It won't hurt anything if you leave the cover off and remove the excess either. I'd probably leave it off and clean it personally, but it's really up to you.

Just put those pictures on your phone or print them or something to show the dealer in case you need to. It shouldn't be ripped on a brand new car.

Looks like something was planning on making a winter home and chewed the insulation. No harm driving without the cover.

to me, the earlier the better. once they start breaking apart its near damn impossible to get it out of the nooks and crannies. plus with all the engine grime and oil spray, it starts to gunk up.... nothing dangerous to the car but looks unsightly....

they all eventually fall apart... mine is doing that too, and I never even messed with it!
just glob some glue on it if you want to keep it... no big deal if you rip it all off

Car was more than likely sitting in a field for a few months.

Field mice.

Field mice.

That's actually probably what it was! The car was sitting on the lot for 3 months.

In any case, the dealer gave me a new cover. Thanks all!

Girlfriend had the same thing happen to her Mazda 3. Happened at the cottage, so we figured it was squirrels. Just cut off the frayed part and put cover back on. I don't think your warrantee covers animals chewing.
