I have a Canon T1i, solid camera doing what I want..
But for Sunday's event, I want to put it on a tri-pod to capture some time lapse stuff. Only issue...I need to buy a tri-pod.
What would be the recommendation ? Nothing expensive, but need function, stability, and need to buy local.

help ?

For a small DSLR, you could buy basically the cheapest tripod Henrys sells (or anywhere else) and be perfectly fine. Its only if you think you'll want more functionality in the future that you should look at something better (light, good ball head, etc).

If you just need a tripod for Sunday you can borrow my old one.

Ami, like the guys are offering, you can just borrow one

If you're looking to buy one for your own use later, because they are really handy especially in low light situations or where you want that long exposure, you are fine with a cheap one that Henry's or even futureshop sells

My wife uses a $60 tripod from futureshop with no problems. The only time I could see you wanting something really fancy is if you were going hiking long distances with it and you wanted something really lightweight.

something like this

http://www.futureshop.ca/en-CA/product/velbon-velbon-tripod-df40-black-df40/10183217.aspx?path=1cec0b57c9c1aabeed32525a0f9b18c 8en02

but I think there's even cheaper ones out there. You canon is a lightweight camera too and unless you're going to be attaching some 400 - 600 mm lenses don't see a problem

if you plan to actually keep and use it but dont want to spend a wholely unreasonable amount, the only recommendation I'd make is the Manfrotto 190 XB. Velbon sells a few cheaper ones that are *decent*, but they're flimsy and arent going to last. I've broken many tripods over the years, and the 190 XB is the only one that's been able to handle my abuse. Truth be told I've actually broken two of them, but Manfrotto / Henry's has always been excellent about replacing them free-of-charge.

+1 on the 190XB. That is actually what I recently bought (don't use them much for photography but like it for video).

I should point out the main issue with the cheaper ones are:
- crappy plastic attachment plates that fall out, shattering your camera and lens into pieces (seen it happen to friends more than once)
- flimsy legs with shitty plastic adjustment clips which always break
- inability to extend legs through a wide range of motion (see how they're all connected by struts at the bottom). One of those features you dont appreciate until you use a "real" tripod, then you never want to go back.
- light weight. Sure being light is convenient for carrying, but it also makes it flimsy and prone to tipping over in the wind or on uneven terrain (again, seen it happen. several times.), even when using a light body / lens. A heaver tripod is more sturdy, plain and simple. Weight is a sign of quality in any type of precision instrument, and a tripod is no exception.

Just my admittedly biased $0.02. I've bought, inhereted and used many cheap tripods over the years. Some have held up better than others. I too will bring mine on sunday if you need to use it.

to add - nice tripods have a hook in the middle to attach weights (camera bag) so it won't tip over. My tripod is extremely light. The ball head is the heavy part.

The manfrotto looks really nice. If I could get it locally for the $125US price I would go that route. Sadly, it is $200 plus tax locally, and I can't justify that right now.
Perhaps my best course of action is to borrow one for Sunday, then Pickup the manfrotto when I am in the US in November.
Unless some has a suggestion in the 100-150 local price range...

Does anyone have a GoPro? They actually make decent timelapse videos, mount it high and you really don't need to worry about it being damaged unless its falling over 40 storeys.

I am going to have a couple go pro cameras in different spots, but I want as much footage as possible

I had a Blacks tripod for the longest time I think it was like $34 or something like that then eventually it gave up the ghost during a shoot and I actually ran it duct taped together for awhile.

I recently picked this up http://www.indurogear.com/products_details_AKB0.html from http://www.vistek.ca/store/ProPhotoInduro/244970/induro-akb0-adventure-series-tripod-kit-tripod-head-case.aspx

So far so good.

Going to mount my gopro on to my roof or spoiler. It might be boring footage if the same car is in front/behind of me.

At least grab the roll out from the pre-meet.

nice that actually looks pretty legit. Never really cared for that style of ballhead, but everything looks sturdy and well made. Definitely a steal for that price
