View Full Version : Ballast mounting suggestions?

I find myself in need of some advice on where to mount HID fog ballasts. I have had them mounted on the back of the front crash bar (?) with double sided tape (3M exterior) for several months now.

I've just confirmed that both of them have fallen off and are siting on my undertray (and may be the cause of an odd rattling noise I hear when going over bumps..)

This is the second time I've found the passenger side ballast come unglued. When I re-stuck it, I made sure to clean both the back of the ballast and the mounting surface with rubbing alcohol. Doesn't seem to have worked.

Unfortunately, I don't have the neat little slim ballasts so they don't just fit anywhere. Does anyone have any suggestions of places that have worked for them/may work for me?
I have a 2007 hatch, 2.3L with oem HIDs.

i just used 3m double sided tape from ct and taped to the bumper right on top of the fogs and it hasn't fallen off

Really important to clean any dirt off first. And use tape that doesn't un-stick when it gets hot (i.e. the 3M tape mentioned above).

I used Zip Ties. 4 years now, no issues.

I figured that'd be less secure. Maybe I'll give it a shot.

Zip tied to where?

you'll be fine with the tape, just heat the tape up a bit with a blow drier before sticking it and hold it firmly in place for abit and you;ll be fine

Zip tie it to your crash bar. Might take a few zip ties to connect the loop, that bar is rather big :)

Honestly, I had this thought too. Seriously considering doing it. I've sort of lost faith in the 3M tape for this job. Works great on my eyelids, not so much on my ballasts

I've had good luck using RTV silicone to mount ballasts. Doesn't look the greatest but it sure holds them in place and it is not too hard to remove them if you need to.
