View Full Version : Rust on lug bolts...so pissed

Hey everyone,
I'm so pissed. I got my msr rims in july of this year and I don't remember the exact place where I got them from but I noticed there is already rust on a majority of my lug bolts. I haven't even had them for a year and I spent an extra $100 on these bolts and they are already rusting, like this sucks. I clean and take car of my car regularly so there is no issue there. I don't know what to do, i'm taking off these rims and lug bolts in november to put on my winter setup, should I maybe take it back to the place and complain? Should I get new ones, or am I just going to have the same problem every year, never mind every 4 months? Like this just pisses me off cause I take care of my car so much and seeing this just gets to me. I've wanted metallic red lug bolts on my rims but I don't want it to rust just like these ones.
So yeah, what should I do?

Do you have pics? Any chance it's just brake dust or rust from elsewhere.
And is the rust on the lugs, studs or rims?

Have you tried cleaning it off? could be brake dust.

never heard of lug nuts rusting...unless they are the chrome ones and the clear coat faded. I have a set of those but don't use them.

Here's pics. Sorry they are bad quality, and it isn't brake dust.

Yeah they are chrome and I think one time that I got my tires off to do stuff someone scratched them and took off some clear coat which caused them to rust, but like still only been 4 months.

Which ones do you recommend? I would like red ones that would match my rims. But I don't want to spend a lot on them. Or should I just paint the rusted ones?

Surface rust can be cleaned off with "NEVR DULL" when the lugs are off during the winter
Paint chips are difficult to match /touch up.
Go on JDMrides or Kijiji. You can find a used set of rays duralumin lugs for about $100 (without getting into more expensive ones like project kicks). They will not chip or rust like other lug nuts mentioned in this thread.
I've done over 20 change overs this season and they are still holding up fine. I expect them to last at least another season or two before needing to be replaced.

I always buy the 20$ ones from ebay and have never had an issue. Why people pay over a buck a nut is beyond me. The quality is just as hit and miss as the cheapo ones.

I try it an if it doesn't work I'll give these rusted ones to my winter rims and get new ones for the summers. Where can you get it, just at Canadian tire?

How badly of fading? Do you have a pic?

Yes they fade over time (but will never chip). Red will begin to look like pink in hue and blue will look like teal. Google for pics.
I'm not sure if that is the still the case with the recently introduced second generation style of rays lugs.

I had Rays lugnuts and they faded to a dark pink colour. Now I have Project Kics Caliber 24 lugnuts, they haven't faded much over 3 years but they started having surface rust in the same spots as op.

Ok, warning everyone now... DO NOT buy these... crappy product. Crappy experience. I understand paint chips eventually but they were only a couple of months old. Garbage.

+1 i have the red Mutaki lugs, they do chip easy but no rust. $40 from G16. i dont see why people drop $100+ on lugs unless they are guaranteed to not chip/rust

i would say the neo chromes on your wheel wont stand out as much, but will add subtle detail to them instead.
