Hey, just wondering how many of you guys use wheel locks?
If so, is OEM enough? or is aftermarket ones better?

Thanks in advance

I use the ones that came from the dealer on my summers and just normal lugs on my winters. They look stupid on straight steelies.

I use them... But i can forsee a potential problem when I have to put my summer tires back on.. I broke the actual lock when putting my winters back on. Or even if i get a flat.. Thats going to be a pain in the arse too. Anyone have an idea as to the cost of getting a new socket lock? (I dont know the actual name of it).

Well I have tuner lug nuts, and it's just as easy for people to get a lock nut key as to get a tuner key. Besides, my lug nuts are so far recessed in my wheel that you can't see them to find out which type they are.

how much do you want to pay is the real question here.

McGuard are good. They are what Mazda uses.

well probably nothing more than $100
not sure the price range for locks, but i mean if my rims are like >$1000 then I am willing to buy a secure type even if it's a little steep

lock nuts are available to purchase to anyone but the sets change from time to time. i wouldnt advise to use OEM lock nuts on steel weels.. they for some reason tend to break off at the end, not sure if its a vibration or why it really happens. just wouldnt advise to do it. go with the regular nut vs the lock nut on the steel wheels.

Oh i am not planning to get it for my steel rims for the winter, I am planning to get it for my summer OZ rims.

I just dropped roughly $800 on winter wheels, which are hot items to sell around winter time, so you best believe they have locks. A friend's dad found his brand new dodge on bricks while it was parked in his driveway in a good neighborhood several years ago; they stole the stock chrome wheels and the truck had actually shifted leaving a couple of the rotors to start melting into his driveway.

If you don't mind buying new winter wheels, then risk it. I carry my wheel lock socket in the car at all times in case of the need to remove it anyway. Better to be ahead than catching up.

When Quebec made it mandatory to have winter tires, there were cases I heard of friend's winter wheels being stolen. If people will break your windows to get a GPS that's now a days 100 bucks or so market value, why wouldn't they try to steal a set of winters worth a few hundred used?

i use 7 sided lug nuts...which are kinda like locks i guess :/ if someone really really wanted to take your wheels. they will take your wheels locked or not. its not hard and doesnt take long (probably 30 minutes for all 4 wheels). there is HOWEVER a lug nut with a rotating out sleeve that makes it pretty much impossible to unbolt/unscrew. but if they strip your SOL

They should not strip if they are hand torqued to the right spec.

+1, lock nuts should NEVER be impacted on by a gun even with a torque stick. its that impacting that ruins the lock (depending on which kind of lock you have). hand torqued is the way to go.

I torqued mine to 85lbs with a torque WRENCH. :)

Comes down to personal preference. I don't use them myself after getting a flat in the middle of winter and having to fiddle with the lock. Nearly every make and model of vehicle now have alloy wheels (some even forged from factory) and have brought the cost of wheels down significantly and make them less likely targets for would-be thieves. Unless of course, you're pimping high dolla rollers.

i think Kijiji/craig has created a whole new market. it's not about the alloy anymore.

used steelies + rubber = easy $300-400 bucks

The locks from the dealership is around $43+ tax. If you lost your key they can take the old lock off and install the new one free. Just be careful not t lose the key out damage it the next time.

Wheels are wheels, and so many people looking for second sets for off-season.

Be safe, get em for both summer and winter.

sorry to jack the thread, but arent mazda oem locks are all the same? at least they look the same to me, when i walk by and see a mazda parked with oem locks, looks identical to mine? so maybe youd be better off buying turner lugs or something a lil rare than just oem

They all look the same, but the pattern is different. There are a bunch of keys for Mazda, so its not impossible to have a duplicate, but they are not the same.

word.

and with the prices of tires keep going up, more demand for used and more attractive or people to steal them to sell

Hammer on a socket that fits nice and snug over a wheel lock, and you can pull them off with ease.

Maybe they'll act as a deterrent but if someone knows what they're doing, they can get around it easily.
