View Full Version : Largest wheel spacers on OE wheel studs

I'm thinking about getting a set of custom spacers machined by a buddy and am wondering what is the widest spacers I can run with the stock studs. Because they are custom, I can have them at any width (instead of just 5mm and 10mm).
On another note, does anyone know the conversion between thread depth and number of rotations? I think the rule of thumb is 7 full rotations to be safe right? Maybe I can just count how many rotations I have to figure out how wide I can run.

at +5mm spacers in the front, i get just about 6 rotations in.

I think Default User had lugs where the thread extended past the seat of the lug. Something like that may help you get some more turns on.

^That's for the Mag style wheel lug setup. My EvoX Enkeis were also like that. Those lugs don't extend past the seat on tuner lug wheels.

So I guess 5mm is the widest I can run. I'm going to count the number of turns now to see how thick i can run

I had 8mm on my rear when i had the car with stock speed rims
I had no problems..

Do you know how many turns you got on the lugs?
I don't want less than 6.5 because I do so much highway driving, and possibly will track on these wheels.

Why not upgrade the studs if you are tracking and adding spacers?
Some tracks are very particular about studs, nuts etc.
If you do plan on going to thew track, be sure to check the safety tech section for events you want to run.
Much better to be safe than it is to have an extra 5mm width foot print for the track.

My reason for not upgrading is because I don't feel like spending that much money on this car. No idea how much longer I will have it, and don't feel like shelling anything more than necessary.
With this opportunity to get some spacers made for cheap, I figure why not.

5 is pretty well it on stock.
Can run more but it's like 4 turns on 8mm IIRC.

5mm is as far as ill go on stock studs. im getting 10mm spacers soon and will have 10mm studs to match. so im getting stock amount of tread when torqued. its all about how safe you want the car to be and what your doing.

i think the second gen studs are the same length as the first gens. i personally think 5mm is the farthest ill go with OE studs. as long as you dont do anything crazy like make super hard turns. you want as much possible thread engagement to be safe.

okay cool, was just curiosity mostly, been looking into it for the spring. I would probably consider doing all the studs too, not sure I'm with the idea of my nuts being loose..... lmao :P

not a bad way to get the stance you want. make sure you dont go too wide/low where youll start to cut and rub the tires. your nuts shouldnt be loose. but running a spacer on oem studs will mean your not screwing all the way in like you use to. more threads = more surface area for the nut and studs to hold together.

10mm won't fit for gen2 sedan 2.0L
I tried. The studs may be longer on bugger engine models but it doesn't work meaning you don't get 7 turns.

heard 8 turns is the minimum. hmm, interesting on the 2.0L, didnt think displacement had anything to do with the studs.

Haha I was just kidding around I know they wouldn't be loose, I would just prefer the oem turns, better safe than sorry right. I do hope to be running coils in the spring, if I have the money, if not just prokits.

Yeah I wouldn't go with a 10mm on stock studs :P I'd like to but would defiantly replace the studs.
Thanks for the help though guys.

Spending the money to buy the extended studs + labour work + spacers is not worth it if you're looking for the right fitments.
With the amount of money to do all that, it can be a good portion towards new wheels. I was thinking the same thing a couple months ago, but said 'eff dat sheet' . All that work of taking off brakes, hub to bang out bolts is too much.

you could always do a research on which wheels you want. with the proper offset, you wont need spacers

I counted the # of turns today when I swapped to my winters. Looks like it is 9 turns. Technically this means 4.5mm is the max I can run while still maintaining 6 turns of the stud. Got some thinking to do....

Where can I buy the longer than stock studs? I was thinking of doing this 3 yes ago when I got my Budd at work to laser cut me a 5 mm spacer. Did not pursue the idea because of shorter lug but issue.

garage 16 sells studs, to be honest most after market shops sell them if you ask.
