View Full Version : CEL turning on and off randomly

So recently these past 2-3 weeks, I've got a CEL. Not sure what the problem was when it first popped up, so I drove back home slowly just so I don't do anything to it. Couple hours later, I turned the car back on...no CEL.

So now I'm debating whether I should unplug the battery to reset the ECU because I'm thinking it's the Corksport SRI that's causing this random CEL.
Is it safe to do so? I did book an appointment with Jimmy, but that is all the way till next week and my parents are nagging me everyday about this damn light.

The most recent thing that I did was change the intake filter........unless airflow increased dramatically over the disgusting fluffy filter that came with the SRI I bought...would that be the culprit?

i say reset the ECU, unplug the batt for a min or so and that will reset it. if you installed the intake, odds are probably thats causing it.

get the code read though, should still be in the memory for what code it was.

Should I go to the dealer to get the code read though? Everyone keeps telling me to go to the dealer because I still have warranty, but I'm trying to steer away from them because I have an aftermarket intake

Why don't you post a pic of the install?
Ask Jimmy if you can drop by just to get the code read. He can do it in 2 minutes.

depends what dealer you go to, they might charge you to get the cel read if it has to do with your intake, even if its under warr.

do what jackal said, if youre too far you can go to a parts source and get the code read for free.

Take it to a mod friendly dealer. Last thing you want is for it to turn into a bigger problem.

Dealer will probably charge you just to check the code.

Any members with an OBDII reader nearby you? I have one but I'm in Barrie.

paaaaaart soooooource reads codes for free. also, check if everything is fitted/tightened properly. might be air leaking in somewhere.

>.> Why does it seem that I don't know how to utilize Jimmy like you guys do...? Might give him a call tomorrow.
And resetting the ECU is gonna be a pain in the ass...because of the dam strut bar...now I want to sell it >.>

Hmmm, guess I'll check that place out tomorrow. There's one pretty close to where I live. Thanks

Have the same code hahahaha just clear it. I think it's my intake not used to the cold weather.
I've had the intake since June no problems until now.

I did not know that intakes had to be climatized to the colder months. :P

Re-check all of you clamps to make sure they are tight. And also check the wires to the MAF. Sounds like that might be the problem.

PULLING out the battery cover was a pain in the butt...as well as shoving the thing back in. Stupid strut bar...

Anyways, drove 3km just to test it out. So far so good...hopefully it won't pop back out

also check the MAF seal too. most people forget about that too. probably reading lean because its reading unmetered air thats passing the sensor. so the computer thinks its getting very little air, but in reality its getting a lot (through a leak). since the computer thinks theres very little air, it reduces the fuel to the ratio of the air coming in. thus a lean mixture.

what kind of filter did you replace it with? climate should not be an issue. i have a short ram/cold air intake with K&N oiled filter plus the coolant bypass mod, if climate was in issue, i should be getting a code.

I replaced it with a AEM Dryflow. I bought the Corksport SRI used from Fayvrir (if that's how you spell his username) which came with a horrific looking original filter that had fibres and stuff sticking out. I ran that for a good 6 months until I decided to change it. I changed the filter last month I believe, but it didn't throw out any CELs until the weather started changing to a somewhat low temperature.

I checked the wires, which look...fine from the outside I believe. I'll check the seal before I head to work.

Disconnected negative battery terminal for a minute
