how to pre set your heater

Hey guys! I want to know how you pre set your heater? So my car has a remote starter installed by the dealer when I bought it. They taught me how to pre set the heater so if i turned on my car using the auto start the heater will go on as well, is this the proper way to do it. They told me to start the car and turn on the heater on desired temp and just turn off the car w/o turning the heat off. So if I use my remoter starter the heater will turn on as well, Is this the proper way to do? I was thinking doing this way will damage the battery, alternator, starter etc...

i keep my truck's defroster on hot, and on max every night, so when i remote start it, at least the windsheild is semi-clear.
