So I got invited to my asian gf's family christmas party, and they are doing this "kris kringle" thing where you pick a present under the tree and hope it's a good one, and people can steal yours or pick one of their own. My thing is, I can't think of something awesome for $20~.

And idea's?

How's their sense of humour? haha. Are they old school or are they down for joke/fun gifts?

More old school

Hmmm, you could play it safe with a gift basket from Bath & Body Works? Always a good fall-back for Kris Kringle

Give them the gift of time...

Starbucks giftcard. :)

Kidding aside, a nice box of chocolate will do. Godiva, Laura Secord or if you have access to one of those unique chocolate stores, that'll be better.

I second the gift basket idea and gift card. Only thing with a gift card is that it's too obvious unless you creatively box it? LOL

A lot of stores offer holiday gift sets/boxes and I'm sure there's some for $20 and under. Hit up the malls!

If they're the old school Asians (not sure if they're Chinese)try a Chinese tea set. You may go a bit over budget with a half decent one but a cool gift to use or just put on display

Give them a card with a respectful admiration of the daughter... say its obvious where her manners etc came from... and some Saki or traditional alcohol!

You could get a nice tea pot from winners / home sense etc and stick a gift card to teavana or davids tea inside. My original though was to buy some loose leaf green tea, but that might be a little stereotypical.

I remember doing this one year with my relatives and family. Get a really expensive brand bag or box like Louis Vuitton or D & G or Gucci (your gf may have one) or other and put your gift in there. Just put a bow on it. People's imaginations go wild even though they know there's only a $20 gift in there. Lots of fun and you'll be the hit of the Asian party!

Will you eventually need to reveal who gave what gift? Are you trying to get into that family's good books? I assume by Asian you mean Chinese (but the same applies to Viet). To old schoolers, everything is about face.

If you don't need to reveal who gave whatever gift, take an idea from what has already been said. If you DO need to reveal and/or you are trying to get into their good books, do yourself a favor and buy something that is around 30-40 dollars instead, but insist that it was 20 if questioned.

If they're HKers, ornate things that look like gold bouillon always work well... Umm... Fancy small appliances (nice panini press for example) could work too.

How come you didn't complain about the bath & body works gift then? huh? You got a problem with practical gifts? :p

Me and my cousins do the same thing every year at Christmas as well.

I always find my gift through the weekly flyers that get delivered. XS Cargo stuff is always a good find :)

20 items at dollarstore. Maybe not 20, since most items are $1.25 now.

Chocolate is usually the best thing that suit almost everyone.
GC are good, but for ppl that too lazy to think.

Chocolate never gets stolen, so provides for a boring gift.
Gift cards always get stolen, since (Asian) people love cash.

I just did a Chinese gift exchange (yes it's non-pc) this past weekend and bought a 16GB USB drive for $11.50 at staples. The limit was $10.
It exchanged a few hands during the game.

Last year my gfs boss photo shopped his head onto Fabios body, put it in a frame and that was his secret santa gift. No one wanted to get that gift. what they didn't know was the $50 LCBO gift card hidden in the frame. He told them after the fact. Everyone got a good laugh at least.

I would feel like an ass if I bought a lotto ticket as a gift to somebody - and they win the jackpot with the ticket I gave then
