So i was told at the dealership that i need to decarbon the injector and the throttle. A quote of $220 was given to me. Does this seem a bit high? Is this something that' REALLY important?
Help this noob out!

It is important but I would do some research to see if you actually need it right now, depends on your mileage/driving habits/maintenance so you may not need it but it is worth looking into(I'm always hesistant if someone tells you that you need something that you haven't noticed while driving). The carbon build up in the DISI engines can get pretty bad so if the engine is running rough and you have bad fuel economy it may be worth looking into.

Just watched a YouTube video that seemed to explain it pretty well: pour a can into the gas tank, half a can into the oil, half a can into the break fluid?
Cool smoke effect after.
Only issue is i just did an oil change, and the guy on youtube said that you have to get an oilchange within 100 km.

Put it in the brake fluid? WTF? You don't put anything into the brake fluid, period...Just go to Crappytire and get a can of seafoam. Anyways the $220 quoted to de-carbon is not only unnecessary, but exceedingly expensive, but it is a total rip at $220. I'd suggest not taking that particular dealers advice anymore.

well the way the dealership does it, they either
a)take the fuse out for the fuel pump. and disconnect the fuel line to the fuel rail. then hook up a pressurized can with a detergent to the fuel rail. they start the car and let the detergent run through the fuel system.
b) they pour a "special" can of cleaner into the gas tank, hook up a can of detergent to a vacuum hose (intake vacuum). they let the the can drip slowly through the intake while running to clean carbon throughout the intake.
however theres a difference between the two here. a) cleans the fuel injectors effectively but only cleans the injectors. b) cleans the intake, while the gas additive cleans the injectors. but isnt effective at cleaning at all (itll still clean though)
the ploom of smoke you see isnt the carbon, thats the carrier/cleaner being burnt off. the carbon is being "soaked" and hopefully "melts" into where it will be removed (oil/oil filter)
these cleaning solutions might cause a problem with high millage engines since it might clean out some of the carbon that might be sealing leaks. or either break off chunks of carbon where it might clog some of the oil galleries.

most dealers for a decarb procedure is usually a few parts. an add into the fuel/ cleaner through the fuel rail, throttle body/ intake manifold cleaner, and additive through the oil to clean the lubrication system.
not just like the seafoam add half to the gas, half to the oil ( run for about 100 km then change) and half bottle through an intake pipe to clean the manifold and such ( so two bottles required). different procedures, materials and costs of course. i did a seafoam on my focus when i had it. smoked like crazy. drove better after, i just didnt like the warning of dont let the vehicle stall ( as i believe it will hydrolock) and then your up for a motor which is a risk of course doing it yourself you take, and i did the seafoam at home when i was working on the father in laws avalanche and he didnt keep the rpms up enough and it stalled and i was like :bang NOOO thankfully it did start and ran after, just smoked the street pretty good. but of course its a chance you take doing it yourself if you do it wrong. can cost big $$$ to fix.

use a really small vac line when sucking the seafoam into the intake,
Pinch the line, start the car, dip the line into the sea foam can, and slowly release the pinch.
Don't suck the bottle through the brake booster line, That'll hydrolock your motor and leave you with a paper weight on wheels.
I seafoamed my winter beater, and could noticebly see higher timing numbers in my scan guage.

Well for a minute i felt almost comfortable with the idea of doing the seafoam....but you scared me off! LOL...i just don't have any real car knowledge yet. I'll bite the bullett and come up and see you Booster, you offer a better price than Mazda of Toronto. I just have to put some money aside....
Eventually i'll make friend with people on this board...and maybe that'll help further my education in automobiles. lol

i find the effects of seafoam dont last very long.... i guess the "carbon" returns within 1000kms of driving. i usually get someone to hold the gas pedal to 2k rpm while i spray mine through the intake. (seafoam spray). i either use the whole can or half. after that i just let the car sit for like 10 minutes while i do something else. drive the car "aggressively" as stated and change the oil ( i actually got the extra mile and do an engine flush with cheap API cert. oil)
im known to do unnecessary things to my car lol. using good quality gas will also prevent carbon buildup (but wont stop it from forming)

Anybody here heard of Terra Clean, and used it before? About 2 dailydrivers ago, my car was a high mileage car and I got it terraclean'd and it was something that you noticed an improvement on when driving afterwards and the increase in mileage was noticeable for a long time.
Trying to find a Terraclean dealer close by seems to be difficult nowadays ...
I think its a Canadian company too.

i think terra clean is what we had when i was at canadian tire. they are all a very similar process to do them but different chemicals and cleaners that are used.

They seem to have a chemical\process called GDI that I'm wondering about for the DISI engines ... if mine wasn't a DISI setup, I'd have gotten the regular TerraClean done every 30K without a doubt cause I was happy with the results on my other car.
Either way, I'd like to get something done (walnut blasting or chemical cleaning) on my intake tract around April.

Also, you can remove the throttle body and wipe it clean. There was a lot of soot on the back side of my throttle body. Just use throttle body cleaner.
Here's a video of my seafoam, for your enjoyment:

Yes, we are friggin geniuses for doing it inside....
