Hey all!

OK, so I know that the STOCK radio output (2010 M3, 4 speaker, no bose) is (according to various forums)

--- "~18 W @ 1% assuming the 2008 is about the same as a 2005."
--- "Maybe 18 sony watts. Probably about 8-10 clean watts RMS"

And installing components with speakers running 88 DB, its highly recommended to get an amp for this. (since its weak as $@%^)

However, I'm going to be putting in my old head unit in, which is a Pioneer 7900BT (http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Car/CD-Receivers/DEH-P7900BT), and the power output is:

--- "Built-in Speaker Power MOSFET 50W x 4 / 22W x 4" Continuous

Would this HU be fine for running 88 db speakers, or would an amp still be recommended?

It would be recommended to get an amp. The head-unit will produce an okay sound at moderate volume levels, however due to the low wattage it could start to distort which would blow your speakers. An amp would be able to produce clean power at higher volumes thus producing better sound and a lower chance of it blowing.
