Don't get me wrong. I like Burke and a lot of what he stood for ( ie. if you didn't help your community you weren't on the team ) He was just no longer any good for the team. The fans and players gave up on him and stopped playing hard for him.

There were many moves I didn't like and knew it was time for him to go when he signed Wilson to a contract extension. He overpaid players and frankly started to slip.

5 Years ago I said the leafs would make the playoffs in 5 years. I could not be more excited for this. The last time the leafs were in the playoffs I was 14. Lets hope they can make it to the second round.

Was an awesome game last night indeed, I was there to watch my very first NHL game and had a blast. Leafs fans were everywhere and chants of "Go Leafs Go" was rampant and practically drowned out all of the Sens chants.

Lets hope for a good playoff run and some exciting hockey to be had

Best of luck to this year's Leafs edition. The only team I can see that can give them issues in the east is Pittsburgh. Boston less so of a concern ( see earlier playoff matches with Ottawa).

I have been a die-hard Leaf fan for my whole life. Put up with many years of ridicule from other hockey fans but never jumped to another team. With that said, a part of me hopes that they don't win the cup. I cant help but think of the headlines: "Leafs win baby-season." etc...

Would still rather win, than not though. With the confidence and attraction to Free Agents (since they would then show they are a serious club), they could build even stronger.

True enough, but I agree that whoever wins this season's cup will have a big asterisk beside it in the record books. I normally cheer for the underdog but this season I hope it's one of the "usual" top clubs, because if a team wins this year that's never won (or at least hasn't won in ages like the Leafs) it's not like winning the real cup after a whole grueling season.

Your right, its slightly harder lol. They play more games/night now. Yea, they don't play 82 games, but play much more frequently... This isn't an easier year by any means. Anyone who views this season as not a real season, probably isnt a real fan

plus a win is a win, doesn't matter if you play all 82 games or 48....it's still winning!

The division is just as tight with points, players still risk injury etc etc.... ;)

When it comes to the Leafs, a shortened season isn't like a real season. They have a history of unpredictable starts. Sometimes they start a season off really well, winning streaks et all. But there always comes a time soon enough in the season when they start to slump and eventually fall out of playoff contention. It's great that this is a shortened season because they can't last an entire season.

I think that the cup is a reward for a team that can last through 82 games and maintain a level of quality hockey.

Well said. The impact of a single winning streak, losing streak, or key injury has a magnified effect on the overall outcome.
While I readily acknowledge that the shortened season presents its own challenges, to me that is exactly why whoever wins this season can't be compared to other championship teams. This season presents UNIQUE challenges, so one day when you're going through the history books comparing this year's champions with those who won following a full season it will be comparing apples with oranges. THAT is the problem I have with this year, and that is why I hope that it won't be a team that hasn't won before (or one that hasn't won in ages). Because if such a team wins this year and they don't win again for 20 years, people will look back on this year's championship as a fluke.

midnightfxgt
04-24-2013, 03:03 PM
Better yet, they win 2yrs in a row and show it wasn't a fluke...... back-to-back champs tho not common lol.

hate to agree with the Montrealer but nobody is going to discount this season. The playoffs are still the playoffs, that hasn't changed. So the team that wins is going to have to do what every other team in recent history has done and win 16 games to hoist the cup.

They didn't do what all the other teams did to get there though.
And you can't say nobody will discount this season when some of us already do.

People here do know that it is widely recognized that the leafs got the short end of the stick when it came to scheduling this year right?

Everyone had back to back games BUT majority of leafs back to backs were against rested teams. Worst schedule in the league.

Agreed. If you win a cup, you win it. Your name goes on it no matter the length of the season.

That being said, just want to give a shout out to my Sens for doing so damn well with out Spezza, karlsson, Cowen until recently and Anderson for a while!
