This entire video is a study in bad decisions. But it ends with a Miata on fire, one very lucky kid, and a good lesson of what not to do when working on your car.

Where do I start? This kid has a Miata project car that he's swapping over to a carbureted V8. That's not a bad thing, in fact, I commend him for working on his own car.

That's the only thing that's goes right.

The engine is on a hoist when he tries to start it up. Why start it at the point? When he tries to start it, it spits out a flame, so he tries to start it again. Then it catches on fire.

But it still isn't running. So he keeps trying to start the car, because that's a legitimate, intelligent decision. Of course, it won't start. His next move is to try and blow it out, because this is a lot like a birthday cake.

So he then goes and grabs a red gas can that is next to the Miata. It's his fuel tank, so presumably he's hoping to starve the fuel supply by taking it away. Yeah, that red cancatches on fire. That then briefly sets his shirt on fire. Right now, this is what is technically known in the car world as a "clusterf*ck."

Instead of putting out the now large fire with a proper extinguisher, he uses a hose. Thankfully it works and does put the fire out, which restores some order to the garage, even though a perfectly good Miata probably sacrificed itself for this cause.

It also teaches a very important lesson: Don't work on your car unless you really know what you're doing.

(Hat Tip to Erwin!)

Starting the car will put out the fire, didn't you know? Kinda like drinking more makes you less drunk.

intake fire. you step on the gas pedal to extinguish the fire and the engine sucks the fire in. thats what i think he was trying to do since the fire looked like it started at the carb.

oh no! i meant if the engine was running and he had an intake fire. stepping on the gas is the way to put it out. now in this case, he should of just stopped when he started the fire. BUT it looks like he was trying to do wat im saying and get the engine running to extinguish the flame.

Yeah, I was taught to keep cranking too but in a slightly different context; as part of an emergency drill when I was flying for "engine fire on start". I'm not sure that's it's, technically speaking, a fire in the intake.

Fire extinguisher was the obvious choice here but given that he doesn't seem to have one... well, no, I think that's his real problem lol. Lucky he didn't do more damage to the car/garage/himself than he did.

No problem at all, it was just backfire, nothing to worry about.

back firing ignited fuel all over the place lol. made it worse by thinking of moving the can

hahaha, I lol'd hard.

lol what? im not even kidding LOL

a carb fire is a little different; as there's, you know, fuel present. You can see that even after he doused all the flames, the carb light up again because it was still really hot and full of fuel. Combustible fuel.

Yeah, I've only been told that in the case of flying lol.

this. Sam, the engine was already running, he kept trying to start an engine that was already running. In the event of a fire, the smartest thing is to just get a fire extinguisher.

oh nice, we got some flyers in here. I took some lessons at Oshawa and Burlington in C152 and 172. :)

i dont think the engine ever got running :/ a V8 with no exhaust instlled would make a pretty loud noise. i think he tried to remove the gas can to keep the fire from reaching it (in which case he failed). seemed like the starter started to fire. the fire starts at the back of the engine and makes its way up to the rest of the engine. he probably spilled some when he fed the fuel pump and the starter made a spark. remember, he doesnt have a gas tank in this thing yet so he's probably running from a small temporary tank or something

so yea, i was wrong about the intake fire :P (but it is how to put out an intake fire)

Generally, the preferred term is "pilot". y'know, to avoid confusion with circulars and philadelphia athletes and so forth. :chuckle

Okay, so we have a "huge" number of pilots here. Can we start a flying club or something? I can always use more pilot-friends...

Stop wishing and start flying? You can get really cheap "familiarization" flights at any flight school.

It's cheaper than a therapist, and twice as effective!

I don't have audio but the article says the engine was already running and he kept trying to start it. The red jerry can he moved was being used as the gas tank, which is why half the garage went up when he moved it because he spilled gas from it and the fuel line.

Could a Mod please add 6strings video to the OP, thanks.

As for the pilots, start another thread :P

so yea, jalop posted up a follow up and this kid did exactly what i thought he was trying to do. he was trying to start the engine (because it wasnt starting) so the flames would get sucked back into the carb.

That kid should have left the youtube video up if he needs to pay for hospital bills. would have made a decent amount from ads and stuff.

i can imagine him being in those "industry safety" videos. honestly though, he could of lost a LOT more so he's lucky to have gotten away with what he has.
