View Full Version : Weird Issue (CEL, Stalling)

OK, so the car seems to be behaving.

Sunday morning, woke up early to go play some golf. I was driving so I vacuumed the car. On my way to pick my buddy, the CEL comes on. First time ever. I pull over on the highway, pop the hood, Check and make sure everything nothing is on fire, levels, belts, etc.

I drive to his place, his father lives across the road (creepy?) and has a code reader - But we couldn't find it. I think, Maybe I didn't tighten the gas cap well enough. I tighten it, then Pull the neg off the battery, hit the brakes a few times and reconnect (car is off) CEL gone, as expected.

It hasn't turned back on.

HOWEVER

I've pulled the battery many times when doing stereo/alarm/lighting work... And while idle has been rough as it re-learns, It has only ever stalled once. Maybe twice.

it stalled 19 times in 10 minutes of test driving. The engine would pretty much instantly die the moment I pushed in the clutch.

Angry, because I just bought New tires, Swapped Springs, Alignment, Dent Removal, Carwash/wax and vacum in the last week and a half, we parked it and he drove.

Got back from golf, started up and drove perfect. Even got me to work this morning with NO issues.

I have a Theory, and am just wondering if it makes sense. Its all just theory because I didn't get the code before I reset it. (regret that now!)

Theory:
Under assumption that the gas cap was loose.

Battery pull clears CEL. ECU takes a while to figure out how to "run" the engine again.

Since it was just stalling (sometimes while coasting at 40kph, etc) I never actually turned the key to OFF. I just started, or bump-started the engine as It was stalling during "long" gear changes or coasting with the clutch in.

Because I wasn't turning the key to "off" it didn't get its 3 "learning cycles" (3 seems to be the magic number?) When I drove it home from golf, it would have been on its 3rd cycle, and the only thing I noticed was that Idle was around 1,000 instead of 600-700 RPM

/Theory

While it was stalling, the only thing I could think of was that it may have been the MAF. I have a Mazdaspeed CAI, but have always used an unoiled filter.

Any ideas/validation?

This is the first time my car has ever really let me down.

Could be numerous things, you could sit here guessing for ages! Just drive it and see if the code appears again, and if it does GET THAT CODE!

OK, 5 days later, CEL has come on again. Driving to a buddy's hosue after work to get the code. I imagine its some stupid emissions thing.

Soooo, did you get the code?

Get a maf sensor cleaner and spray the MAF sensor wires. Might be broken wires.

It turned off before I got it. Literally on my way to my friends house who has the reader. Borrowed it for the weekend but no light yet

If the CEL came on and went out on it's own, you should be able to still get a reading. Depending of course if the reader you have has that function.

I'm using my dads code reader and it shows a p 0113. Air flow sensor

Wiring harness for the IAT and MAF could have shorted out or a wire was malfunctioning.

New pending code. .. http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/08/06/3y7yreza.jpg

Also, looked at Intake, jiggled wires and connections. http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/08/06/y8asy3y4.jpg

There seems to be a bit of orange dust from one of the connectors. Going to brush it out and hit it with some lps

Edit. . Looks finehttp://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/08/06/atymaseq.jpg

Wires to the MAF, check that carefully.

Worst case; That orangey terminal looks like it's been overheated, possibly from high voltage spikes which could mean a short somewhere along the harness, meaning a new harness. It could have, and hopefully was caused by just some condensation, whereas your cleaning and spray should fix her up....fingers crossed ;-)

I think the overheating you see is actually this horrible white/tan dirt road dust I picked up heading to my parents place this weekend. I just spent 2 hours washing it off my car and scrubbing my rims clean of the stuff. it has etched the tires horribly.

Fingers crossed. Everything looked completely perfect - so I'm worried. The evap 2404 error is "pending" which I don't actually know what that means - is it broke or not?!? lol

I'm not sure if I should clear the code or just drive it and see if it dissapears? (a few more cycles? does it work that way? or will it stay lit until I do a battery pull or clear from my ELM327?)

So the Engine light turned off on its own on the way to see RED2 (good movie btw!)

I checked it after, and it still showed the P0113 and a "pending" P2404 so I cleared them. 2 on/off cycles and about 20 minutes of driving and the light hasn't come back on.

Fingers crossed?

Fingers crossed! No CEL yet, driven 120km and cycles with cool down between.
