Seems that the power steering pump died on my car. The whole pump costs about $1000 from Mazda, but I'm finding kits on eBay that say replacing the top pump, while keeping the old motor, fixes 99% of power steering issues. I can buy a genuine Mazda power steering pump without the motor component for about <$100. The part I'm considering buying is BBM4-32-68ZR-01
Has anyone had experience with going this route rather than replacing the whole power steering system?

Iirc there was a recall on the power steering pump for your year.
Have you looked into that first?

IIRC the recall does not cover the 2004MY.
I would find out what the exact problem is first.

Yes the 2004 wasn't covered in the recall. I'm going to take the car for Jimmy to see at Street Performance but it likely is the pump

this is one of the reasons why I recommend people flushing the factory fill out and putting in quality synthetic ATF as a replacement... keep the pump and steering parts lasting longer :)
