So I have been terrified for the past few months. At the end of may I had an incident at work which an ultrasound showed that I had a torn tendon in my left wrist, pinched verves under both carpel tunnels and fluid build up as well... This would have meant surgery for me and possibly would have ment I would not be able to attend my policing course this year....

Today I found out that my MRI results came back and I have nothing more than sprained tendons that will heal in no more than 7 weeks time and a couple very tiny cysts on my tendons as well in my wrists.. This has taken so much stress off me and my heart rate has finally gone back to normal :) I am so excited over this news I thought I would share this with you guys.

What did you do at work to injure yourself if you don't mind me asking?

Sounds like you're in good hands with whatever Doctor you're dealing with.

I ruptured my Achilles Tendon 2 years back and dealt with a great Doctor at Centenary Hospital who knew his stuff.

Well... To keep a long story short I pissed off the wrong person ( high up) they demoted me and put me on a job called a "butt welder". I was the guy who was loading steel sheets on to rollers and welding these sheets together. To move the sheets I had to attach 4 screw down clamps onto them. The constant movement of my wrists screwing and un screwing these clamp damaged my wrists. this happened over a period of 4/5 months. I would have to move 88 sheets a day so that entails putting on and removing these clamps 704 times a day. Due t this being a very very repetitive job it ended up damaging my wrists which has brought pain to my hands/wrists/forearms. After I told my work I was hurt they kept me on the job for a additional week and a half because that's how long I had to wait to see my Dr. He was on vacation and I had no one else to go to. So this increased the damage. Originally it was only my right wrist that was hurt. after the week and a half it was both due to over compensating with my opposite hand/wrist. ATM I am on light duty repairing welding whips which is extremely boring but it has given me time to heal.

My last day at this place of work is this coming tues and then I move to Trenton.

TO ADD. If you live in Hamilton and you get a job at National Steel Car I beg you to keep in mind the safety of yourself because to the company you are nothing but a number. Don't get me wrong working here has been lucrative and I have done well for myself while here. please stay safe as this company is in the top 10 of Canada's most dangerous places to work.

Is anything permanent? Doesn't the ministry of labour deal with this kind of stuff?

No permanent damage. The ministy of labour does not get involved with these types of incidents. If my hand broke off or if my head exploded they would.

The person I pissed off demoted me because I protected a couple guys on my last crew I was running. The person was foreman of quality control. He claimed that some guys were not properly cleaning the multi pass welds they were doing. What happens in a ¼ weld multipass with a 1/16th wire, if you generally get a blue line at the seems of the welds that are touching. Well because these welds were 5/8ths they become hotter and heat changes strength in material and generally when that happens a slightly diffrent colour will appear. So he took that as them welding over slag. Long story short he got pissed because I told him what it is among him and a couple of his peers and when the job ended I got the banana lol.

lol rule #2, don't make your boss look stupid in front of others or by himself, even if he is. :)

they should really look into toggle hold-down clamps (manual or pneumatic), or at least something that could be closed with an impact driver. I used to design high volume (non-automotive) manual welding fixtures, and we'd always have to at least consider operator ergonomics....That being said....I see this was National Steel Car, and I'm not at all surprised. A lot of our welders came from there, and it usually was not with good things to say.

Either way....glad this turned out to be just something minor!

Yes some of the welders from steel car are crap. But some of us are A+ welders. That's how I moved up quickly. I talked to HR today and they had intentions on making me supervisor within the year lol. Oh well I have other plans lol.

Ergonomic my ass at this place. they say health and safety is key... That's a load of crap, they could care less lol. The mentality here is WORK HARD AND FAST!!

Have you been prescribed any sort of treatment?

Chrisinski

No treatment. I had to wear a wrist brace for the past 3 months but thats no longer needed and I have been told just to take it ease and not go weight lifting yet lol
