Looking into a video recorder for my car and this seems to be alright and well priced. Does anyone have another thought or other product worth while?

Seems like a cheapy. If I had the money I would buy the GoPro but Im not paying $450 for a cam that's going to get blown up in my hands lol.

I think Lockdown carries this one (pretty sure I saw it on their website) so you might be able to get a decent review or something from them?

Nexus 4 8GB is now 199 and can be modified via root to change the bitrate from 12M to 20M. I'm not sure if it would be good as a dash camera.

The downside with GoPro and a smartphone is that you have turn it on/off and leave it out for someone to smash your window or mount/dismount every time.

A big concern is the wide angle lens avaliable in the dash cams. At the minimum, even the crappiest dash cam have a 120 degree wide angle view. Cell phone cameras don't have such lens, though there are DIY aftermarket mods you can do, whether or not you feel its worth it is up to you. That and I have yet to find a good mount that eliminates some rattling/shaking.

My current dash cam is a Shadow GT300w (rebranded/copy of the DOD LS300w I believe). It has a 140 degree wide angle view.

In comparison, a GoPro is 170 degrees I believe.

There are lots of good ones at less then the rip off that is the go pro. I am using one of the DOD/Tiotech ones the GT450W right now. It works well the video quality is acceptable and it's pretty small doesn't take up much space. The other reason to get the GT450W instead of the other ones is that it comes with a adhesive mount. Back when I had to use a aftermarket GPS I has no end of issue with the suction cup coming off during winter months due to the cold.

Got it here:
http://www.foxoffer.com/gt450w-full-hd-1080p-car-dash-camcorder-video-recorder-dvr-p-563.html

There are other options as well from foxoffer. Prices are likely higher than what it goes for in Asia but I didn't trust my parents to get me the right one after I asked for an audio jack adapter and got a set of cheap headphones instead a few years back.

GT300W/GT450W/GT500W or whatever it's called was my other option. It looks really good. Last time I read about it, there were issues with getting firmware updates.

Suction cup mount sucks, the 3M tape mount is much better.

It's working fine. Couldn't care about firmware update if it just works.

I am interested in getting a car dash camera, for legal and safety reasons. There are apparently many accident scams in Toronto lately, where someone hits you purposely, then claims you hit them.

After more than 1 week use. the dash cam performed as expected. Very good video during daylight hour. Night time videos are not that good but still acceptable. The real test will come when summer starts and temperature inside the car jumps up. It would best to as for another review after one year of use.
