Found out this week that one of my JBL front speakers isn't working. Don't know why but it lived a decent life. I already have JBL tweeters with in-line crossovers installed, so I'm looking at options for replacing the 6.5" mid-range speakers.
Considerations:
I don't run a sub and there is 95% chance I won't use one in this car
Currently have stock rear speakers, not sure if I will upgrade those yet.
Therefore I'm looking for something that has reasonable mid and mid-low frequency response. Obviously can't replicate a sub but something that can fill in the low end a bit.
I have an amp running (or capable of) 75W RMS per channel to the fronts.
Price-wise I'm in the $100-150 bracket. $100 is better but I can stretch a bit if it is worth it and/or they are locally sourced.
I'm not against buying a component setup so I can swap the tweeters if I don't like how the new speakers sound with the JBL tweeters.
I've toyed with going for something cheap, but I don't want to spend $60 and then hate the sound or have the speaker crap out in 4 months.
I'm eyeing a set of CDT CL-6 (http://www.cdtaudio.com/sep_components/midwoofers/cl6.htm) woofers at the moment. Looks like they run around $110 direct from the manufacturer. From what I've read they seem to fit my features requirements. Anyone have anything else I should be looking at?
