Hello everyone,

I'm new to the site but following for awhile.
I have a 2005 Mazda 3 GS Sport 2.3L (5 speed manual) that is having an odd issue that just started.
When I step on the gas about halfway or more, the rpm's shoot up but the car stays the same speed. Once the rpm drops, the car will take off as if a turbo is kicking in. If I'm crusing at 3000rpm, hit the gas the rpm's will jump to about 5000 then drop back to 3000 and boom the car takes off like a rocket.
The car is 5 speed manual and I noticed this happens in gears 2,3,4,5. 1st gear is fine. It never did this before.
I was told it could be the clutch slipping or I've even had people tell me that it could be a sensor (Check Engine light is not on).
I'm going into a mechanic on Wenesday but wanted some opinions from you experts so I don't get taken in at the mechanic.
This is the first problem I've encounted with this car as it's been great. I'm currently at 130 000K.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like a slipping clutch

clutch, 100% No sensor in the world will disengage a manually operated clutch.

Hoplite, did you ever figure our the source of your problems with the rpms?

If not, it could be the start of a speed sensor issue. Mine is gone on my 2005 Mazda 3 with manual transmission at 150K. Usually when the sensor is bad, the check engine light will come on and sometimes your power steering check light also (but mine was very intermittent). My odometer stopped working altogether as well as my rpm gauge.

Doesn't sound like anything the OP has mentioned?????

His check engine light isn't on.
His power steering light isn't on.
His odometer and RPM gauge work fine.
and his clutch is slipping.

So how are these 2 problems the same?
